Day five of the 2024 Olympic Games saw perhaps the most electrifying race thus far as Hungarian world record holder Kristof Milak tried to hold on down the stretch against a fighting Frenchman Leon Marchand in the men’s 200m fly.
When all was said and done, Marchand crushed an other-worldly last 50m of 29.8 to get to the wall first in 1:51.21 while Milak settled for silver in a still-outstanding time of 1:51.72. Canadian Ilya Kharun also landed on the podium in 1:52.80 for bronze.
Further down the line, however, was Noe Ponti of Switzerland who logged a new national record en route to capturing 5th place.
Ponti’s path saw the 23-year-old one-time NC State commit earn the 3rd seed out of the heats in 1:54.77 followed by a time of 1:54.14 for the 4th seed in last night’s semi-finals. That latter effort checked in as a new Swiss standard with Ponti tying it once again this evening as he roared to the wall in the final.

Ponti took bronze in the 100m fly 3 years ago at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and will race in that event again here in Paris.

One could not think of a more noble photo op.
