PRESS RELEASE – INDIANA STATE

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Indiana State Swimming and Diving defeated Valparaiso by a score of 177-85.

Surging Sycamores vs Valparaiso
Freshmen Madison Misko claimed two victories in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.57. While posting a season best time of 1:57.70 in the 200 freestyle.

Jayln Talbot also claimed two victories in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.90. Talbot touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.82.

Madison Brand posted a season best time of 10:45.58 in the 1000 freestyle. Molly Fogarty was right behind her claiming second place with a time of 10:50.36.

Surging Sycamores in South Bend, Ind.
Indiana State also competed against Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Ball State in South Bend, Ind. The Sycamore got their revenge and defeated Ball State by a score of 146-144. Indiana State fell the Notre Dame and Michigan State by scores of 212-81 and 209-88.

Senior Kendall Hansen placed second overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.79 while claiming third overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.16.

Andrea Putrimas claimed third place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.61 while placing fifth overall in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:26.51.

Ashleigh Sinks placed fourth overall in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.39.

Megan Schade touched the wall third overall in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.08. Rhiannon Wozny was right behind her claiming fourth with a season best time of 2:10.80.

Christensen’s Corner
“We were a little mixed this weekend. The split squad was a little different and we faced some tough competition in Notre Dame and Michigan State,” said head coach Josh Christensen. “In some places we handled that well, in others we need to get better. It’s all continued learning and growth opportunities for our program though.”

Christensen also noted that it is time to focus on conference, “Now, we’re at that point where it’s time to rest and sharpen up for conference. We’ve been very consistent with our training and racing all year, so I’m excited to see what this group can do, as we continue to make big strides as a program.”

PRESS RELEASE – VALPARAISO

The Valpo women’s swimming team hosted its final home meet of the season on Saturday against Indiana State. Freshman Mikayla DePover (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) led the Brown and Gold, posting two individual wins.

How It Happened

  • Valpo’s first win of the day came in the 400 medley relay with the team of Paige Wright (Surprise, Ariz./Paradise Honors), DePover, Erica Martins (Hartland, Wis./Lake County Lutheran), and Morgan Markley (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell). The team clocked a time of 4:02.10 to edge out the Sycamores’ top squad by one-tenth of a second.
  • DePover’s first individual win came in the 100-breaststroke, as she bested the second-place finisher by over two seconds with a time of 1:06.58. Her second individual win came in the 200-breaststroke as she recorded a time of 2:29.73, just .57 off her season best in the event.
  • DePover notched a second-place finish in the 200 IM as well, clocking a time of 2:16.82.
  • Markley recorded a second-place finish in the 100-free (54.73), while Wright placed second in the 500 free with a time of 5:17.47.
  • In the final event of the day the team of Wright, Mariah Sturdivant (Chicago, Ill./George Westinghouse Prep.), Chiara Robinson (Castle Pines, Colo./Rock Canyon) and Markley finished second in the 200-free relay, stopping the clock at 1:41.44.
  • Indiana State won the scoring, 177-85.

Up Next

The Valpo women will head to Columbia, Mo. on February 19-22 for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The men, who did not compete on Saturday, will take to the pool for the Summit League Championships on those same dates in Sioux Falls, S.D.
