Matt Milovanovic won three of the final four events to lead Brophy College Prep to the Arizona Division 1 high school state title. Chaparral won on the girls side, led by four wins from juniors Greer Pattison, Morgan Brophy and Ashley Strouse.

Girls Meet

Chaparral won 9 of 12 events on the girls side, breaking one state record and multiple pool records on the way to a dominant team title.

The state record came in the 200 medley relay, where Greer Pattison, Blakely Schuricht, Morgan Brophy and Riley Courtney went 1:42.49. That took almost a second off of a 2014 state record set by Chaparral. It also broke a pool record held since 2009 by a relay featuring future Olympian Breeja Larson. Chaparral won the event by 2.5 seconds, kicking off a dominant overall effort. Pattison was 24.9 on the leadoff backstroke leg and Brophy 24.4 on the fly leg.

Pattison and Brophy would each go on to win two individual events, along with Ashley Strouse.

Pattison, a junior, won the 50 free (23.15) and 100 back (53.79). In the latter race, she took down her own pool record and won by almost three seconds. Brophy, also a junior, won the 200 IM (2:02.84) and 100 fly (55.46), both by wide margins. And yet another junior, Strouse, won two races herself. Strouse was 1:47.68 to break a pool record in the 200 free, though she didn’t match her own state record of 1:45.44 from last year. Strouse also won the 500 free in 4:50.40.

Chaparral won both free relays. Strouse came off the 500 to anchor the 200 free relay, which won in 1:35.87. She split 23.3. And in the 400 free relay, Chaparral won by more than six seconds, going 3:25.11 on a 50.29 leadoff from Strouse.

Other event winners:

  • Perry High’s Alexia Jackson won diving, scoring 444.20 to win by just a point over Desert Vista’s Isabelle Lombardi.
  • Xavier College Prep senior Maddie Wright took the 100 free, going 51.09.
  • Sophomore Emma Becker out of Mountain View won the 100 breast, going 1:03.98.

Boys Meet

Brophy College Prep set two state relay records and Matt Milovanovic went 4-for-4 on the boy’s side. The team won all three relays, setting Arizona state records in both the 200 and 400 free relays. Milovanovic swam and won three of the final four events to cap his team’s win.

Early in the meet, the senior Milovanovic went 1:38.45 to lead a Brophy College Prep 1-2 in the 200 free. Fellow senior Kolbe Bayless was second in 1:40.79. Later on, Milovanovic started his busy late-meet run by splitting 20.6 on the winning 200 free relay. Finn Dowdall led off in 20.85, Bayless split 20.81 and Dylan Krueger anchored in 20.57 as Brophy went 1:22.91, knocking eight tenths off an eight-year-old state record.

The very next event, University of Arizona signee Milovanovic went 49.62 to win the 100 back by a full second. Then, with only the 100 breast in between, the senior returned to anchor the Brophy College Prep 400 free relay in 45.74. Bayless was 46.91 on the leadoff, Dowdall 45.30 on his leg and Krueger 45.71 as Brophy went 3:03.66 to take three tenths off the school’s own state record from 2014.

Dowdall also won the 50 free individually, going 20.50. In a show of depth, Brophy College Prep also won the medley relay with none of those four athletes on the team. Garrett Munk, Henry Palmer, Gabe Gonda and Dane Nelson went 1:34.34 to win that race by a second and a half.

Chaparral was second as a team, getting two wins. Senior Ellis Bohon went 4:30.62 to win the 500 free by four seconds. And senior Matthew Leblanc was 56.58 to take the 100 breast by a narrow four tenths.
