Tennessee’s Meghan Small will contest her fourth different event lineup combination in her final showing at the Women’s NCAA Championships later this month, as the senior has entered the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
The 200 IM has remained the only constant for Small throughout her collegiate career, as her incredible versatility has allowed her to pick and choose her events year-by-year rather than going with a set lineup.
Last season as a junior, the now 21-year-old placed seventh in the 200 IM, ninth in the 200 back and 22nd in the 200 free. As a sophomore, she raced the 200 IM, 400 IM and the 200 fly, and in her freshman campaign, she did the 200 back and both IMs.
At the recent SEC Championships, the Lineboro, Md., native raced the 200 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM.
This season, Small ranks eighth in the nation in the 200 free (1:43.21) and 12th in the 200 back (1:51.80), while her 200 breast seed time of 2:12.89 has her ranked 93rd on the NCAA psych sheets.
That time, done at the Lady Vols’ dual with Louisville in October, is Small’s best time by over a second and a half.
She sits third in the 200 IM, trailing only Virginia’s Kate Douglass and Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson, and ranks eighth in the 400 IM.
Such a boss. Don’t understand this choice right now, but her event range is crazy.
If she’s decided to race the 200 breaststroke over an event where she’s ranked 8th in the country… well, I think she might drop a bit of time.
