Scouting the Field
The Hawkeyes join a three-team field this weekend, competing alongside Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, and diving teams from South Dakota and Illinois. Northern Iowa returns 13 upperclassmen from a team that finished fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2014. After finishing seventh in The Summit League in 2014, Western Illinois returns six upperclassmen and welcomes seven incoming freshmen.
We Meet Again
Iowa has familiarity with the visiting group having faced both dual opponents at the CRWC in 2014. Iowa squared off with Northern Iowa on Oct. 18, posting a 238-61 triumph over the Panthers. The Hawkeyes also faced Western Illinois on Feb. 7, downing the Leathernecks, 123-83.
All Time Series
In head-to-head competition, the Hawkeyes boast an all-time record of 15-1-0 over Northern Iowa and 13-2-0 over Western Illinois.
Quick-Cap Shamrock Invite
Iowa completed the third and final session at the Shamrock Invitational on Jan. 31, at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Indiana. The Hawkeyes finished the weekend’s competition with a win over Incarnate Word (279-77) and fell to Notre Dame (282.50-87.50).
Swimming to The Postseason
Seven Hawkeyes have swam to a combined 16 NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 2014-15 season.
Becky Stoughton: 500 (4:47.40) and 1,650 free (16:21.97), 200 fly (1:59.42), and 400 IM (4:18.32)

In the National Rankings
Becky Stoughton ranks 22nd nationally in the 1,000 free (9:49.51), and 31st in the 1,650 free (16:21.97). Emma Sougstad holds the 15th-fastest time in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.14, and 27th nationally in the 200 breast (2:11.71).
Grilli Back for Senior Year
Two weeks of training separated redshirt senior Abby Grilli’s transition from student-teaching to competing in a Big Ten matchup against Illinois on Jan. 17. Grilli posted a Zone D Diving Standard on the 1-meter and placed third with a score of 289.50.
Grilli also added a zone diving standard off of the 3-meter at the Shamrock Invite diving to a score of 305.85.
Freeman Takes 2nd At Winter Nationals
University of Iowa volunteer assistant Deidre Freeman dove to a silver medal on Dec. 20, at the 2014 USA Diving Winter National Championships held at the McCorkle Aquatic Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Freeman dove alongside Indiana standout Jessica Parratto in the women’s 3-meter synchro event. The two dove to a score of 563.40, finishing behind Abby Johnson and Laura Ryan (597.30).
Sougstad Named Swimmer of the Week
University of Iowa sophomore Emma Sougstad was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 16. Sougstad earned the accolade after posting a pair of record-setting times in the dual against Iowa State on Dec. 12.
Stoughton Leading the Way
Senior Becky Stoughton is off to a fast start in 2014 pacing the Hawkeyes in six events. The Peoria, Illinois, native owns top times in the 500 free (4:47.40), 1,000 free (9:49.51), 1,650 free (16:21.97), 200 fly (1:59.42), 400 IM (4:18.32) and as a member of the 800 free relay (7:17.78).
Kabacinski Sprinting to the Top
Junior Olivia Kabacinski remains a top sprinter for the Hawkeyes this season. Kabacinski leads the team in the 50 free (22.80), 100 free (49.61), 200 free (1:46.68), as a member of the 200 (1:31.30) , 400 (3:22.04), and 800 (7:17.78) free relays, as well as the 200 (1:40.60) and 400 (3:41.66) medley relays.
Sougstad World Ranked
UI sophomore Emma Sougstad has earned a spot among the top 50-ranked swimmers in the world following competition at the 2014 Summer Nationals in Irvine, California. Sougstad placed 19th in 50-meter breaststroke competition at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
Newcomers Stepping Up
Four freshmen have made an immediate impact in 2014-15. Meghan Lavelle has posted Iowa’s top times in the 100 back (54.48) and 200 back (1:58.27). Tereysa Lehnertz leads all 100-fly times (55.31). Four newcomers also rank second on the team’s top times list. Carly O’Brien is second in the 100 free (51.06), Rowan Hauber in the 200 back (1:59.68), and Lehnertz in the 200 fly (2:01.34). All five relay events include at least one newcomer as a member of the quartet.
Freeman Earns Silver at Fina Grand Prix
Former Hawkeye and UI assistant coach Deidre Freeman dove to a third-place finish Oct. 26 in 3-meter synchronized diving competition at the FINA Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Grinnell, Iowa, native dove alongside former University of Texas standout Maren Taylor. The duo dove to a score of 259.80 — earning a third-place finish behind two teams from Malaysia.
Record Breaking Year
The Hawkeyes broke eight school records during the 2013-14 season. Individually, Olivia Kabacinski (50 free – 22.70, 100 free – 49.84), Emma Sougstad (100 breaststroke – 1:00.90), and Haley Gordon (400 fly – 54.58) all broke school recrods in their respective event. The team of Lindsay Seemann, Sougstad, Abbey Tuchscherer, and Elise Bora set the record in the 200 medley relay (1:40.12). The team of Seemann, Sougstad, Gordon, and Olivia Kabacinski swam to a record in the 400 medley relay (3:39.54). Kabacinski, Borja, Emily Hovren, and Seeman set the record in the 400 free (3:21.07). The team of Kabacinski, Hovren, Becky Stoughton, and Seemann set the record in the 800 free (7:12.49).
2013-2014 MVP
Olivia Kabacinski returns to the Hawkeye roster after earning the team’s Most Valuable Player award as a sophomore. Kabacinski is the UI school record-holder in the 50 free (22.70), 100 free (49.84), as a member of the 400-medley relay (3:39.54), and as a member of the 800-freestyle (7:12.49).
Championship Season
Six Hawkeyes competed in the Phillips 66 National Championships this past summer in Irvine, Calif. Senior Grant Betulius, juniors Mike Nelson, Brian Donatelli and Colleen Champa, and sophomores Kyle Patnode and Emma Sougstad each took part in competition. Sougstad earned a 16th place finish in the 100 breaststroke in the final day of competition.
Academic Honors
Eleven members from the 2013-14 women’s team were honored by the Big Ten Conference with the Distinguished Scholar Award. The team was acknowledged as an All-America team for the 10th consecutive year. In all, 35 women have been named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America list during coach Long’s tenure.
Head Coach Marc Long
Marc Long is in his 11th season as head coach for the University of Iowa swimming team. It’s his 10th as head coach of the combined program. During his tenure as head coach of both programs, 86 school records have fallen and 112 Hawkeyes have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Campus Recreation and Wellness Center
Ground was broken for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in October 2007. The facility opened in August 2010 and is home for the Hawkeyes. It is located at the corner of Burlington and Madison streets and cost approximately $69 million. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.
Iowa Swimming and Diving Tradition
Iowa was one of the first schools in the nation to compete on a collegiate level and competed at the first NCAA Championship. From 1937 to 1960, Iowa placed in the NCAA top 10 18 times, crowning nine NCAA and 22 Big Ten champions.

CSCAA Top-25 Rankings
Iowa ranks 21st in the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I team ranking, announced Feb. 5, by the CSCAA. Iowa is one of six Big Ten schools in the Top-25: No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Ohio State, No. 15 Indiana, No. 18 Minnesota, and No. 23 Wisconsin. Purdue also received votes.
In the National Rankings
UI senior Grant Betulius ranks second nationally in the 100 back (45.56) and 13th in the 200 back (1:42.19). Roman Trussov ranks 14th in the 100 breast (52.98) and 19th in the 200 breast (1:55.95). Jerzy Twarowski ranks 12th in the 200 fly (1:44.00) and 13th in the 100 fly (46.70).
All-Time Series
Dating back to the first meeting in 1971, Iowa holds the all-time series against Western Illinois (13-1-0). Iowa most recently scored a 120-94 win over Western Illinois on Feb. 7, 2014, in Iowa City.
Winning Ways
After winning the Hawkeye Invitational on Dec. 7, the Hawkeyes have posted five straight heaqd-to-head wins with triumphs over South Dakota State (126-90), Northwestern (171-129), Notre Dame (195-175), Incarnate Word (299-69), and Missouri State (215-153).
Boschult Makes Nationals Debut
UI junior Addison Boschult made his nationals debut on Dec. 18, competing on the platform at the 2014 USA Winter Diving Nationals. The Omaha, Nebraska, native finished 11th after posting a score of 1,050.45 in the finals.
Swimming to The Postseason
Eight Hawkeyes — Jerzy Twarowski (2), Roman Trussov (2), Jackson Halsmer (2), David Ernstsson (1), Chris Dawson (3), Grant Betulius (2), Chris Freeman (2), and Andrew Parker (1) — have a combined 15 NCAA ‘B’ cut times in 2014. Betulius also holds an NCAA ‘A’ cut time in the 100 back (45.56).
Diving to the Postseason
Three Hawkeyes have posted six NCAA Zone Standard diving scores on the 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform. Brandis Heffner posted qualifying dives on the 1-meter (325.88) and 3-meter (339.00). Addison Boschult posted qualifying dives on the 1-meter (320.35), 3-meter (367.13), and platform (394.35). Matt Mauser also posted a qualifying zone diving score on the 3-meter (329.95).
Record-Breaking Weekend
Five school records fell at the Hawkeye Invite from Dec. 5-7, in the CRWC Natatorium.
Jerzy Twarowski: 100 butterfly (46.70), 200 butterfly (1:44.00).
Grant Betulius: 100 backstroke (45.56).
Roman Trussov: 100 breaststroke (52.98).
Addison Boschult: platform diving (394.35).
Betulius Qualifies For Nationals
UI senior Grant Betulius posted an NCAA ‘A’ cut time of 45.56 in the 100 backstroke to lead off the 400-medley relay on Dec. 5, at the Hawkeye Invite. Betulius, a native of Naperville, Illinois, smashed the previous record, held by Dustin Rhoads (46.33) and topped the pool record of 46.30 that has held since the 2012 Big Ten Championships.
Trussov Leads Breaststrokers
Junior Roman Trussov returns to lead the Iowa breaststrokers in 2014-15. The Kazakhstan native qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke as a freshman. He currently is the Iowa school record holder in the 100 (52.98) and 200 breaststroke (1:55.84).
Newcomers Stepping Up
Two freshmen have posted top times for the Hawkeyes in 2014. Jerzy Twarowski has posted season bests in the 100 (46.70) and 200 butterfly (1:44.00), and holds the second-best time in the 200 IM (1:51.15). Chris Dawson posted top times in the 500 free (4:28.39),1,000 freestyle (9:22.75), and the 1,650 free (15:28.38) as well as the 400 IM (3:56.72). Garrett Hoce holds the second-best time in the 400 IM (4:01.48). Two of Iowa’s relay events include at least one newcomer as a member of the top quartets.
Twarowski: B1G Newcomer of the Week
UI freshman Jerzy Twarowski was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 4. Twarowski earned the accolade after a breakout meet in the dual against Minnesota on Oct. 31. The Krakow, Poland, native claimed three top finishes and swam to season-best times in the 200-yard medley relay (1:29.46), 100 fly (48.65), and 200-fly, where he touched in with an NCAA `B’ cut time of 1:47.55.
Championship Season
Six Hawkeyes competed in the Phillips 66 National Championships this past summer in Irvine, Calif. Betulius Back for Senior Season
Senior Grant Betulius returns as the most accomplished swimmer on the Hawkeye roster after garnering honorable mention All-America honor in three events in 2013 – 100 back and 200 and 400-medley relays. The Naperville, Illinois, native is the Iowa school record holder in four events — 100 back (46.33), 200-medley relay (1:25.82), 400-medley relay (3:09.66), and 800-free relay (6:26.79) — heading into his senior season. Betulius posted NCAA “B” qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 backstroke last season. Betulius swam to the Hawkeyes lone win in the 100 backstroke against Michigan on Oct. 4. The Naperville, Illinois, native recorded a time of 49.27.
Off the High Dive
The Iowa diving team has experience and youth on its roster in 2014-15. The Hawkeyes return junior Addison Boschult and sophomore Brandis Heffner, while welcoming two incoming freshmen — Evan Hull and Matt Mauser. Boschult led the Hawkeyes in 3-meter (343.20) and platform (381.50) last season. He qualified for NCAA Zone Diving in both events and finished fifth at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships with a school-record score of 381.50 points on the platform. Boschult capped the 2013-14 season by garnering the “Lobby” Lobdell Award as the men’s diving MVP.
Freeman Joins Staff
Former Hawkeye All-American Deidre Freeman joins the Iowa coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Freeman, who coached from 2011-14 at Grinnell High School and Grinnell College, will work with diving coach Todd Waikel and the divers. Freeman is an accomplished diver in her own regard, as she was 1-of-14 women named to the 2014 AT&T Olympic Performance Squad. The group includes divers who most exhibit the skill and determination to become 2016 Olympic Team members. Freeman is still the Iowa record holder on both the 1 and 3-meter springboard events.
A Special Year
The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team will host the Big Ten, NCAA Zone Diving, and NCAA Championships as part of its 2014-15 schedule.
It is the second time the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held in Iowa City. The UI hosted the 1927 NCAA Championship at the UI Field House.
The 2015 Big Ten Championships will take place Feb. 25-28, while the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships are set for March 9-11. The NCAA Championships will be held March 26-28. All events will be held at the UI Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
