Mecklenburg Swim Assn Breaks 15-18, 17-18 NAG Records for Mixed 200Y Free Relay

2021 MOC Championship Finale

  • Date: March 26-28, 2021
  • Location: North Charleston Aquatic Center
  • Format: LCM-Friday; SCY-Saturday and Sunday

Swimming at a time trial on Sunday at the 2021 South Carolina MOC Championship Finale, Mecklenburg Swim Association’s Garrett Boone (18), Coleman McCreery (18), Teresa Ivan (17), and Lyndsay Flynn (18) took a full 2 seconds and 27 hundredths off the 17-18 National Age Group Record for the Mixed 200 Freestyle Relay. They also went 1.9 seconds faster than the 15-18 National Age Group Record set by Nation’s Capital Swim Club in 2019.

The MSA quartet combined for 1:24.27 to beat SSC’s 2018 mark of 1:26.54. The Seahawks set both the 17-18 and 15-18 NAG Records at the NCAP Invitational in December 2018 with Brian Brennan, Cole Whitsett, Heather MacCausland, and Camryn Carter. All four were 17 at the time. The following year at the 2019 NCAP Invitational, NCAP’s Trace Wall, Landon Gentry, Camille Spink, and Phoebe Bacon undercut SSC’s 15-18 mark with 1:26.18 but did not set the 17-18 record because Gentry was only 15.

Like the Suburban Seahawks and Nation’s Capital relays, the Mecklenburg Swim Association foursome started with the two boys and was followed by the two girls. That makes it easy to compare splits. The big difference in the three relays were the sub-22 splits by Ivan and Flynn.

Suburban Seahawks 17-18 NAG 2018 Nation’s Capital Swim Club 15-18 NAG 2019 Mecklenburg Swim Association 2021
Brian Brennan 20.11 Trace Wall 20.36 Garrett Boone 20.52
Cole Whitsett 20.60 Landon Gentry 20.51 Coleman McCreery 20.35
Heather MacCausland 22.72 Camille Spink 22.64 Teresa Ivan 21.94
Camryn Carter 23.11 Phoebe Bacon 22.67 Lyndsay Flynn 21.46
  1:26.54   1:26.18   1:24.27

Boone, an NC State commit, has a PB of 20.00 in the 50 free from a relay leadoff at 2019 Winter Juniors East (when he swam for ATOM). McCreery’s best flat start, from 2020 North Carolina 18&U Winter Championships, is 21.50. Ohio State-bound Ivan notched her PB in the 50 free at 2021 North Carolina High School 4A State Championships, which she won in a record-setting time of 22.46. Flynn, a Michigan commit, swam her fastest 50 free, a 22.03, in December at the 18&U Winter Championships.

I’ll be honest, I read the headline and immediately thought “okay, a nice filler for swimswam.”

Then I read the splits.

Congratulations to Mecklenburg
