Luke Waldrep Breaks Baylor Swimming Record at Tennessee Aquatics Invitational

14-year-old Luke Waldrep dominated the Tennessee Aquatics Invitational, posting best times in 10 out of the 11 events he swam, while winning 9 of them. 

Waldrep, who swims for Baylor Swim Club, shattered the team’s record in the boy’s 13-14 100m backstroke. His final time of 1:04.59 broke Ryan Bishop’s team record from 1999. 

 

Waldrep continued his momentum by posting a third place finish in the open 400 IM. His time of 4:54.62 sliced over a second off of his best time, placing Waldrep as the top 14& under swimmer in the event. Waldrep was also the top 14&under performer in the open 400 freestyle, where he won the event in a time of 4:25.62. 

In the 13-14 200 IM, Waldrep posted a winning time of 2:17.85, demolishing his best time by 4.5 seconds. Waldrep saw a similar drop in the 100 freestyle, where he dropped 5 seconds en route to victory in a time of 55.89, getting under a minute for the first time. 

Waldrep completed the sweep of the sprint freestyle events by placing first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.89, slicing .8 off of his personal best. In the 200 freestyle, Waldrep saw another 4 second drop, swimming a time of 2:02.21 en route to victory. 

Waldrep also won the 200 butterfly (2:17.93) and 100 butterfly (1:03.37), while placing 2nd in the 200 backstroke (2:22.33) and third in the 800 freestyle (9:04.03). In all of the races, Waldrep cut significant amounts of time, including 10 seconds in the 200 butterfly and 4.5 seconds in the 200 backstroke. 

Other Highlights:

  • 14-year-old Avery May posted a runner up performance in the women’s 400 IM, touching in a personal best of 5:26.54 to cut 6 seconds off of her best time.
  • 17-year-old Olivia Leonard won the women’s 400 freestyle in a personal best of 4:34.35.
  • 16-year-old Sam Flack swam to victory in the men’s 200 IM, dropping 2 seconds en route to posting a time of 2:13.38.
