Loyola Wins Every Event En Route To Sweep of Lafayette

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland won all 28 swimming events, as well as two in diving, on Saturday as the Greyhounds swept Lafayette College in Patriot League swimming and diving action.

The women’s team scored a 227-73 win over the Leopards, while the men were 235-65 winners.

Three Greyhounds won three events, and two more won a pair, as both teams moved to 2-0 overall this season.

Pool Dominance

  • Twenty-eight swimming races were competed on Saturday, and the Greyhounds touched the wall first in every one.
  • In all but three individual races, the Greyhounds took at least the top two spots, and they went 1-through-3 a total of 16 times.

Three With Three

  • Riley ZingerLily Mead and Joe Hayburn all won three races individually for the Greyhounds, and both Hayburn and Mead were on winning relay teams.
  • Hayburn scored victories in the 100 and 200 backstrokes (49.72 and 1:51.53) and the 100 butterfly (50.57).
  • Mead was a three-time winner for the second week in a row, winning the 100 backstroke (56.94), 100 freestyle (52.19) and 100 butterfly (57.01).
  • Zinger picked up three wins in just her second collegiate meet, taking the top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:11.24), 500 freestyle (5:09.94) and 200 individual medley (2:08.96).
  • Mead and Hayburn were both the lead off swimmers on the 200 medley relays to open the competition.

And, Three With Two

  • Max VerheyenPaige Simko and Michael Gozdan were all double winners for the Greyhounds, as well.
  • Both Simko (1:05.55 and 2:23.01) and Gozdan (55.70 and 2:05.95) touched the wall first in their respective breaststroke races, winning both the 100 and 200 versions on the women’s and men’s sides.
  • Verheyen took first in the 200 freestyle (1:42.19) and won the 200 individual medley for the second week in a row, this time in 1:53.51.

Brotherly Connection

  • In what is likely to become a common theme for the Greyhounds this year, brothers Joe and Patrick Haybrun were members of Loyola’s winning 200 medley relay – along with Verheyen and Caleb Kelly – to start the race, and they battled for a one-two finish in the 100 backstroke.
  • Joe Hayburn took first in that race, winning in 49.72, while Patrick eased to a second-place finish in 50.62, more than a second in front of the third-place finisher.
  • Patrick Haybyrn was also a winner for the Greyhounds on Saturday, taking first in the 100 freestyle in 46.20, leading 10 Greyhounds among the top 11 finishers.

All Of The Relays

  • Loyola won all four relays last week against Lehigh, and the Greyhounds did so again Saturday versus the Leopards.
  • Mead, Simko, Haley Robinson and Charley Tulio teamed to win the women’s 200 medley relay in 1:45.64, while the team of Kelly Bruen, inger, Laura Latham and Fay Moser took second in 1:48.26.
  • In the men’s race, Loyola took the top three spots in the 200 medley relay with Joe Hayburn, Verheyen, Patrick Hayburn and Kelly winning in 1:30.00. Tyler Knurek, Gozdan, Hans van Lierop and Liam Schindler were second 1.78 seconds behind.
  • Robinson, Michaela Schultz, Moser and Tulio combined for a time of 1:36.98 to win the women’s 200 freestyle relay, and van Lierop, Knurek, Patrick Hayburn and Kelly won the men’s race in 1:23.91.

More Victories

  • Aside from the double and triple winners, 11 more Greyhounds won races on Saturday.
  • Faith Karr took first in the women’s 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:53.90, while Riley Fried won the women’s 200 freestyle (1:55.26).
  • Tulio beat her competition to the wall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.15, and Lauren Lane was a winner in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.97.
  • For the men, Alex Plavoukos needed all 1,000 yards of the first men’s individual race to get the win. He edged teammate Matt Gray by 31-hundredths of a second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:44.14 to Gray’s 9:44.45.
  • Cameron Shinnick was a victor in the 200 butterfly in 1:51.85, and Kelly took top honors in the men’s 50 freestyle in 20.58.
  • Patrick Hayburn wont he 100 freestyle in 46.20, and Henry Mueller raced to a time of 4:39.83 to win the 500 freestyle.
  • Cali Fasser scored 233.48 points to win the women’s 1-meter diving, and Sam Hersick was a winner for Loyola in the men’s 3-meter diving with 254.33 points.

Up Next

  • The Greyhounds will be off next weekend to gear up for the three-day Thomas Murphy Invitational. Loyola will host the event Friday-Sunday, October 27-29, at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness & Aquatic Center.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lafayette swimming and diving team began its season Saturday afternoon in a dual meet against Loyola Maryland. Loyola captured the win for the women, 227-73, and the men, 235-65.

For the women, sophomore Katie Hensell snagged a first-place finish in the 3-meter diving with a 215.03 finish. Fellow sophomore Isabella Van Ess placed second in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke, with final times of 1:05.94 and 2:24.12, respectively. Van Ess also placed third in the 200-yard IM (2:16.25). Sophomore Emma Luttrell finished third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.71) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.85).

Junior Maggie Ivie had third and fourth-place finishes in the 200 and 100-yard backstroke. Ivie finished with a time of 2:12.22 in the 200 and 59.73 in the 100. Freshman Caroline Schenck placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.40) and junior Shaylee Daniels placed second in the 1-meter dive (228.38).

On the men’s side, freshman Landon Orth placed first in the 1-meter dive and second in the 3-meter dive, with 277.80 and 235.95 finishes. Junior Peter Kawash placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (51.93), fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.00), and second in the 200-yard IM (1:55.20). Senior James Lapsley had a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 53.42.

Sophomore Peter Curtis placed third in the 3-meter dive with a 224.78 finish and freshman Trey Telleen placed third in the 1-meter dive with a 232.95 finish.

The Leopards continue their season on Oct. 28 in a home dual meet vs. Colgate at 12 p.m.
