VALPARAISO – The Butler swim team defeated Valpo and was narrowly defeated by Lewis this weekend in a meet hosted by the Beacons. Alani Hightower-Bend and Lauren Bergman were recognized as the BU Swimmers of the Meet. Hightower-Bend won two of her events and dominated the 200 Free Relay with a 23.67 split. Bergman won the 50 Fly.

“It was great to watch this team have so much success at this meet after a hard week of training,” Assistant Coach Allie Carmichael stated. “Winning six events and being so close to such a competitive team shows the toughness and grit this team demonstrates every day at practice. It was fun to watch many girls evolve their race strategies after the House of Champions meet and gives us all confidence that this team has big things in store for the remainder of the season!”

Hightower-Bend won the 50 Back with a time of 27.21 and Gianna Leffler came up with a third-place finish (28.46). In the 100 Free, Hightower-Bend finished first (53.77), Olivia Stotts ended up in third (54.25) and Grace Crane was fifth (56.39).

Hightower-Bend, Stotts, Bergman and Emily Landwehr made up the BU 200 Free Relay Team. They won the event with a time of 1:37.70. The Butler B Team posted a time of 1:44.06 and the C Team went 1:46.60.

In the 200 Medley Relay, Hightower-Bend, Landwehr, Kate Schilling and Stotts placed second (1:53.32). The B Team finished at 1:53.72 and the C Team posted a time of 1:57.78.

Bergman used fast turns to win the 50 Fly for BU. She clocked in at 27.10 and Megan VanValkenburgh was also involved with a fourth-place finish (28.83).

The Bulldogs got another win in the 200 IM. Schilling led all student-athletes with a time of 2:13.10 and Sadie Brown finished third (2:15.53). Schilling also won the 100 Fly (1:00.65) with Bergman close behind in second (1:00.83).

Landwehr had second place finishes for Butler in the 50 and 100 Breast. She swam the 50 in 30.50 and the 100 in 1:07.61.

The ‘Dawgs got awesome performances from Olivia McKee, Leffler and Caroline Zimner in the 100 Back. The trio finished second, third and fourth with times of 1:01.58, 1:01.66 and 1:03.54.

Elizabeth Naylor came up with one of her fastest dual meet times of the season in the 500 Free (5:23.42). She closed the event well in the last 150 to out touch the third-place finisher by .04. Sam Tomic had a fast time as well to earn fourth (5:32.37).

Zimner and McKee had consistent splits for BU in the 100 Free. Zimner would lead the ‘Dawgs with a third-place finish (11:14.68) and McKee was fifth (11:23.29).

Naylor had a great race strategy in the 200 Free and would end up in third place with a time of 2:00.10. Tomic was just off her best time for fourth place 2:02.97.

The Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded their fall semester competition schedule on Friday at the Valparaiso Aquatic Complex, as the men took on Lewis in a dual meet and the women faced Butler and Lewis in a tri-meet.

How It Happened

  • The men had a swimmer crack the program’s all-time best on Friday, as sophomore Luke Snider (Germantown, Tenn./Memphis University School) placed second in the 50 fly in a time of 23.82 —fifth-fastest in program history.
  • Two Valpo men led the team in multiple events. Sophomore Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) paced the Beacons in three individual swims — the 50 back, which he placed second in with a time of 24.84, the 100 back (53.19) and the 200 IM, where he posted a runner-up finish with a time of 1:57.56.
  • Sophomore Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) led the Valpo contingent in the sprints, recording the team’s top time in both the 50 free (21.96) and the 100 free (47.98).

  • The three other Beacon women to pace the squad in multiple events did so in two different disciplines. Freshman Olivia Tressler (Las Vegas, Nev./Desert Oasis) topped the team in the 200 free (2:05.90) and the 200 IM (2:19.06).
  • Freshman Kailyn Benoit (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) led the way for Valpo in the 100 fly (1:01.37) and the 500 free (5:38.61).
