Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Kierstin Godfrey, a senior at First Colonial High school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has committed to the Virignia Tech Hokies as a member of the high school class of 2020. A member of the Tide Swim Team, Godfrey is primarily a sprint freestyler.
I’m so excited to announce my commitment to Virginia Tech to swim and further my academic career! A huge thanks to my amazing friends, family, and coaches for supporting me throughout my career. #gohokies!!!!
Godfrey will add some much-needed sprint depth for the Hokies when she arrives next fall. She finished 5th at the Virginia 6A High School State Championship meet in the 50 free last year as a junior, where she swam her best time in 23.53.
Godfrey dropped time almost across-the-board in the sprint freestyles. For example, last season as a junior she dropped over a second in the 100 free and almost 3 seconds in the 200 free. She hasn’t had an obvious taper meet so far as a senior.
Best Times in Yards:
- 50 free – 23.53
- 100 free – 51.40
- 200 free – 1:51.49
She would be Virginia Tech’s 8th-best 200 yard freestyler this season, but an improvement of only a second would climb her all the way to 3rd in that ranking. She is similarly-positioned in the 100 free. The Hokies’ 200 free relay ranks 6th in the ACC so far this season, while their 400 and 800 free relays rank just 8th.
The rest of the Hokies’ 2020 recruiting class so far is more distance focused, including open water National Teamer Chase Travis and 1:46 200 freestyler and 1:53 200 backstroker Emma Atkinson.
Virginia Tech continues to work on a very small class, though second year head coach Sergio Lopez recently said that he believes the team’s roster, at almost 70 swimmers for men and women combined, is too large, indicating plans to trim down the team in future seasons.
