Day 1 of the 2013 FINA World Championships contest was very predictable, with three out of four events having around 2400 points scored (which comes out to about 6 points per entry). That’s a solid result for an average.
The one exception was the women’s 400 free, where only a third of that number, in the range of 800 points, were scored. Why was there such a point disparity? It wasn’t because nobody expected Ledecky to finish well (almost everyone had her in the top four), but it’s because only eight pickers had her winning, and none of the top four seeds coming in actually finished in the top four. That’s Camille Muffat, Bronte Barratt, Coralie Balmy, and Lotte Friis (who ended up scratching the event altogether). Huge upset.
That’s a contrast to the men’s 400 free relay, where despite all of the talk, went exactly to chalk and had the same top four as the Olympics last year.
For those wondering, picking exactly to chalk would’ve netted 19 points; 243 of our readers matched or exceeded that number.

I’m generally not very good in predictions but the wins of Katie Ledecky and France were not hard to pick.
Wrong, only 8 people picked Ledecky. And the 400 free relay had 3-4 top teams that all went 3:11. Adrian being sick and Agnel out of shape, along with Russia doing so well at WUG, but not sure they could hold the taper, all threw in unkwon factors.
I’m in the 142-173 position from 397 participants with 21 points. Not bad. hahaha.

Back a couple years ago on the Swimnetwork.com site that was the precursor website for SwimSwam, I won this Pick’Em for nationals one year. Now I’m tied for 244th place out of 397 with a zillion others, schlepping down here with the masses. Where did I go wrong? Well I didn’t realize right away that the deadline was 2am Central; I was thinking 2 am Pacific, so I did the whole thing in about 10-minutes whereas before I would spend half a day researching it.

years ago during CNN SI (sports illustrated) and USA swimming forums, I finished third on two occasions, and I was also respectable during the days of swiminfo and speedendurance.
My attachment to Australia (as I lived there for several years) clearly has failed me this time lol (mckeon!!! barratt!!! magnussen!!!!! grrrr), also thanks to Muffat (whats up girl?)

244th. For me this is just for fun. I have had a bad habit to make crazy bets with money so I’m going to be a winner even I ended up at last. I’m going to save pure cash as this contest has taken the role of adding excitement. 🙂

lol I hear you; I lived in Oz for a year myself and lost a lot of points on Aussies today too, as well as Muffat. On the bright side I also lived in Auckland for a year so adopted Boyle from way back and so happy to finally see her on the podium today; I had picked her for third too, I think.
Somebody on here said in somewhat broken English that Muffat said she swa she was behind and just gave up, but it was made to sound like she actually said that and that is unconfirmed, as it wasn’t clear. ATTENTION EVERYONE: I am very confused with the date of birth of Cameron Van Der Burgh…..100 Breast WR Holder…..on all of the results his DOB is 1998..so he is 15 years old? Someone needs to fix this..no way is he 15..that would have made him WR holder at 14 years old.
Its a typo. His date of birth is 1988, so he is 25 years old.
