Assistant Coach for Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving

Augustana University invites applications for an Assistant Coach for Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving. This is a 12-month position within our Athletic Department responsible for assisting with position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the sport program as well as possible additional responsibilities as assigned within the athletic department.

Major areas of responsibility:

• The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with all phases of the swimming and diving program.
• Perform recruiting responsibilities as assigned by the head coach to meet the objectives of the university and team, including evaluation, contact, and establishing relationships with prospective student-athletes and coaches.
• Assist head coach in all day-to-day operations of the sport program.

• Abide by all written policies, procedures, and guidelines of Augustana University and the Department of Athletics. Understand and adhere to the Augustana Athletic Department Manual that outlines general staff conduct.

A strong understanding of swimming techniques, strokes, and training principles is essential. Coaches need to analyze swimmers’ forms, correct errors, and optimize performance.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary.

OVERALL FUNCTION

The reporting relationship is to the Director of Athletics.  For Athletics, the primary responsibilities are to direct, support and supervise a successful intercollegiate swim program representing assistant coaches and student athletes.  The Head Coach is responsible for the swim team budget, strategic planning, facilities, policies, compliance, scholarships, promotion and leadership of the team.  The Head Coach will also be assigned additional duties within the Athletic Department.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Develop, manage, and successfully coach the sport of women’s swimming including practices, games, scheduling, recruiting, equipment management, reporting scores and statistics.
  • Assist with the administrative components of the women’s swim team including scheduling, travel arrangements and other administrative areas.
  • Manage and operate within budget parameters, without exception. Submit all receipts and budget reports on time as directed by Director of Athletics.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Conference and NAIA by-laws and regulations.

COM consists of a 50 meter Olympic size swimming pool, a world class diving facility with one- and three- meter springboards, and three, five, seven, and ten-meter platforms, two aerobics pools, a 25 yard lap swimming pool, a leisure pool with lap lanes and varying depths, two complete dryland gyms, a comprehensive learn to swim department, fully equipped fitness center, and the largest physical therapy clinic in the area.

COM’s programs have broadened over the years to include aquatic therapy, water aerobics, and a comprehensive physical therapy practice established in 2007. With over 700 child athletes and 1,500 adult members, COM offers a range of programs from learn-to-swim lessons to competitive dive and swim teams, and fitness programs like yoga and water Tai Chi.

The center has produced numerous athletes who have competed at various levels, including Junior National, Senior National, NCAA Division I, Olympic Trials and The Olympics (Natalie Hinds). This position is responsible for assisting the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach in all facets of the program, including but not limited to: organizing and conducting team training and practices, recruiting, team travel logistics, scholar-athlete development, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. Additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Coaching (100%):

Reporting to the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach, the assistant coach works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist head coach with developing and implementing training and instruction for practices and competitions.
  • Assist with all administrative aspects of the sports program. This includes but is not limited to: prompt completion of all administrative paperwork, team travel logistics, creation of practice plans, scholar-athlete and team development, and collaboration with CMS athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operation, compliance, equipment, facilities, and events.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of academically qualified student-athletes to the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges.
  • Represent CMS Athletic Department and the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

 

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree is required or equivalent in work experience.

 

EXPERIENCE: Previous collegiate participation and coaching are preferred. Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.

 

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license is required.

Management and Administration

Practices are held 4:30-7 on weekdays year-round. Coaches are also expected to work during weekend swim meets generally once per month.

Summary:
This position is responsible to the Director of Athletics, reporting to the Head Swimming & Diving Coach, for providing coaching expertise and leadership for the administration of the intercollegiate men’s and/or women’s swimming and diving program; assisting the head coach in the effective education, management and administration of all aspects relating to a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes, and performing other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other related duties may be assigned by the head coach:

Assists in coaching student-athletes, which includes evaluating their performance in both practice and competition, teaching fundamental techniques and providing leadership and instruction, as directed by the Head Coach.

Teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior for the student-athletes in your charge. Creative positive working relationships with everyone associated with the program.

Maintain standards of performance consistent with departmental academic and athletic expectations as reflected in the mission statement, goals, objectives, departmental guidelines, and performance appraisal procedures. Strive or excellence in academics and athletics.

Coordinate and implement with the head coach and compliance officer eligibility requirements to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations, proper administration of financial aid for both prospective and enrolled student-athletes, facilities scheduling, and contest administration and game operations as necessary.

Implement a successful recruiting strategy to attract outstanding student-athletes to attend Colorado Mesa University while remaining in full compliance with all NCAA and RMAC rules, as well as departmental and college policies and procedures.

Responsible to plan, organize, and execute training plans for Divers of varied levels of collegiate experience and ability. Organize and supervise all practices, group workouts, film sessions and contests for Divers.

Responsible for monitoring of student-athlete’s academic progress through classroom checks, study hall and progress reports. Lead the coordination, development, supervision and daily operations of summer camps and clinics.

Oversight of team travel requirements, including transportation, meals, and hotel arrangements. Includes execution & oversight of CMU Travel Expense Reports.

Engage in, coordinate and help implement all fund-raising activities for the program in conjunction with the head coach, athletic advancement and its representatives.

Responsible for the development and implementation of all aspects of pre-season, in-season, post-season and offseason strength and conditioning. Responsible for the supervision of graduate assistants, interns, managers, and student workers.

Communicate regularly and maintain a positive and constructive working relationship with support staff in sports information, student services, sports medicine, campus recreation, business office, facilities/operations, compliance, athletic advancement, marketing, and ticket office, to assist in implementation of an efficient and effective program and department.

Represent the university at professional meetings, alumni gatherings, campus activities, and civic affairs as requested by the head coach or athletic administrators.

Attend and participate in department and staff meetings as requested/required.

Encourage an effective outreach program with student-athletes that provide benefit to the on and off-campus community.

Maintain, as appropriate, effective relationships with parents, alumni, friends of the program, and others toward the positive image and promotion of the program.

Evening and weekend work is required.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Three years’ dive coaching experience.
• Demonstrated experience working with community groups to encourage and foster their participation in the athletic activities or events.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an accredited college and university.
• Demonstrated diving /swimming coaching experience at the collegiate level.
• Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of coaching/team supervision, the ability to effectively coordinate recruiting activities, and the ability to maintain team discipline and instill proper ethical and moral standards.
