RIVERDALE, NY – Behind the strength of 13 different individual winners, the Iona University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team closed out their regular season with a pair of wins over MAAC rival Manhattan College.
RESULTS
The Iona women posted seven individual wins from seven different swimmers for 136-56 victory, ending the 2022-23 regular season campaign at 9-2. The Iona Men had 6 individual men claim seven wins en-route to a 152-39 win to end their season at 4-6.
MEET SUMMARY
The meet held at the Riverdale Horace Mann School pool, saw sophomore Ashley Benkert take the 100-yard Free at 54.89; senior tri-captain Grace Curry won the 100-Butterfly at 1:00.74; sophomore Molly Finn touched first in the 100-Backstroke at 1:02.11; junior Megan Josephs won the 200-Freestyle at 1:58.01; freshmen Victoria Novinskiy took the 100-Individual Medley race at 1:00.66; Senior Tri-captain Taylor Spillman was first in the 500-Free at 5:20.53, with freshmen Elisa Vaher winning the 1000-Freestyle at 11:04.61.
The Iona men saw two wins from junior co-captain Michael Faughnan, who touched first in the 100-Individual Medley at 52.67 and in the 100-Freestyle at 45.93. Sophomore Brian Baldwin won the 100-Butterfly at 52.98; freshmen James cash touch first in the 1000-Freestyle at 10:18.26; Graduate student Daniel Hadary won the 100-Backstroke at 54.36; freshmen Mikel Palaj took the 200-Free at 1:46.12, with classmate Matthew Woyksnar winning the 500-Freestyle at 4:51.11.
COACHES’ COMMENTS
“Collectively, we swam well today and were able to improve on some of the adjustments we had to make from our last meet Wednesday at Fordham and had better enthusiasm and focus.,” noted Coach Nick Cavataro. “The next 10 days are very important as we get deeper into taper and final preparations for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in Buffalo,” continued Cavataro.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan women’s swimming and diving team celebrated senior night for the three women on the team while hosting Iona today. The women fell to Iona today, 136-56.
The three seniors honored today were Teddy Segmuller, Mackenzie Tuttle, and Jessica O’Brien.
In individual races this afternoon, Abbey Mink placed third in the 100-yard IM with a finishing time of 1:01.48. This was a new school record for the women with the previous record being 1:02.13.
Tuttle placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:59.07, 0.06 seconds behind first place. Tuttle also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 5:22.21.
Segmuller won an event for the Jaspers this afternoon placing first for the Jaspers in the 50-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 25.30, only 0.01 seconds ahead of second. Natalia Velez-Serrano and Grace Dillon finished first and second for the women in the 100-yard breaststroke with finishing times of 1:22.31 and 1:23.29. Shayna Millard placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.99).
The women placed first and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a finals time of 1:48.27 and 1:52.77. The first-place team consisted of Segmuller, O’Brien, Millard, and Mink. The women placed third in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:53.67. The team consisted of Mink, Millard, Jessica O’Brien, and Juliana Saric.

We did have a new school record in the women’s 100 yard individual medley. Abbey Mink broke the old record of 1:02.13 set in 2017″
This marks the end of the regular season for the Jaspers. Manhattan now moves on to the MAAC Championships, starting on Feb 8 in Buffalo, N.Y.

In individual races this afternoon, Branden Deiss placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.96), 1.34 seconds ahead of fourth place. Deiss also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 5:00.38. Jonathan Carsen placed first for the Jaspers in the 50-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 22.30, 0.24 seconds ahead of second. Vinny Tramontana also won an event for Manhattan, placing first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a finals time of 1:11.98.
For the relay events, the men won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.08. The team consisted of Andrew Lebak, Joe Brennan, Jack Martin, and Carsen. The men also placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:33.65. The team consisted of Lebak, Carsen, Brennan, and Jorge Flechas.
This marks the end of the regular season for the Jaspers swim and dive team. They now move on to the MAAC Championships, starting on Feb. 8 in Buffalo, N.Y.
