Day 2 of the 2025 Women’s MVC Championships is in the books. The 2nd day of the meet saw Indiana State jump into the lead, while Southern Illinois, who was leading after day 1, slipped to 2nd. 7-time defending champions Missouri State are currently sitting in 3rd, more than 100 points behind Indiana State in the lead.
Though Southern Illinois slipped out of 1st, they still broke two more championship records on the day. The Salukis closed out the session by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:34.56, which not only shattered the championship record, but broke the MVC record as well, which SIU set in the fall at 3:34.85. Celia Pulido (51.46), Olivia Herron (59.93), Maria Padron Salazar (52.97), and Zaria Terry (50.20) teamed up to get the job done.
Other notable splits in the relay include Illinois State’s Mia Snow clocking a 52.14 on the fly leg of her relay and Northern Iowa’s Faith Larsen anchoring her relay in 49.14.
As was the case with both relays on Wednesday night, Indiana State’s medley relay of Sahara Visscher (54.74), Ali Pearson (1:00.74), Kaleigh Kelley (53.94), and Chloe Farro (49.48) set a new program record with their time of 3:38.90.
It was Herron who was the other record breaker on the day. Prior to the relay victory, Herron took the 200 IM in 1:57.85, shattering the championship record of 1:59.71, which had stood since 2020. Herron was just off her career and season best, which stands at 1:57.21 and is the MVC record in the event. She was strong all the way around in her race last night, but her 33.23 breaststroke split is where she really broke the race open.
Northern Iowa’s Faith Larsen won the 50 free convincingly, swimming a 22.42. The performance marks a new career best for Larsen, clipping her previous best of 22.48. Additionally, the swim last night marks a new program record for Larsen. She also won her 3rd-straight MVC title in the event, which makes her the first UNI swimmer to do so in any event.
UIC was dominant in the 500 free to open the session last night. Molly Kroeger took the race in 4:47.20, touching just ahead of teammate Madison Helmick, who came in 2nd with a 4:47.62.
Indiana State picked up a win on the night as well, seeing Jecza Lopez earn gold in 1-meter diving with a score of 305.35.
Indiana State’s rise from no program to conference title contender is impressive.
Missouri State has won the last 8 MVC Championships, not 7. The last time they lost was the 2015-16 season.
Did they have it in 2019-20 season?
Yes – the COVID shutdown was not until March of 2020 and the championships were held the month before in February.
2021 Championships were held later than normal in April – the season did not start until the spring semester due to COVID.
SwimSwam’s recap article from last year’s championships notes they won 8 straight.
