Long-time Mission Viejo Nadadores Head Coach Bill Rose has announced he will be retiring in December 2017. At 73 years of age, Rose has been with the swim club since 1992 and is widely regarded as one of the United States’ top distance coaches.
After having coached at the University of the Pacific in the early 70’s, Rose moved on to the DeAnza Swim Club in Cupertino, California before then taking the reins of the Canadian Dolphin Team of Vancouver. The storied coach’s resume also includes a stint as Arizona State University’s Head Coach beginning in 1979.
Throughout his career, Rose held esteemed positions as a member of the U.S. National Team coaching staff and Canadian Pan American Women’s team staff, in addition to serving as a U.S. Pan American coach in 1995. Rose was also named to the coaching staffs of two World University Games squads. He was inducted into the American Swim Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.
Key Olympians under Rose’s tutelage across his career include Larsen Jensen and Chloe Sutton, in addition to notable athletes such as the late Fran Crippen, Tom Shields, Ashley Twitchell and Grant Shoults.
Of his decision to retire along with his wife, Siga, Rose says,”It’s probably best that I spend some quality time with my grand kids and my wife,” he said. “It’s been a great ride. But I’ve got to remind myself, it’s not over yet.”
They forgot Ahmad Filsoof?
they forgot Ahmad Filsoof!?!?!?!
Chad Carvin?
I can’t believe Mike Bruner’s name is not on the list! I’d add Rick Reeder, Joe Dietrich, and Craig Schwartz as well.
Congratulations Coach Rose!

would be nice if he continued to coach and just stepped back from head coach. Kind of like John Urbanchek. And Jim Montrella still coaches at MV adn he is older than Rose. Isn’t he the one who coached Mike Bruner and not Bill Rose?
Jim coached Susie Atwood, Steve Genter, Ann Simmons, Dana Shrader and Leilei Fonoimoana to the 1968-1976 Olympic Games. Bruner was with Coach Rose ever since Bruner was a kid.
My point that the LA-OC area was at its height in swimming in the 1970’s. Most of the swimmers at USC started their careers at other states or countries but in the 1970’s it was a lot different.
Back then it was an absolute blowout. Nowadays swimming talent is more spread out across the country- but SoCal swimming is still by FAR the best LSC in usaswimming
Proud to have swum for Coach Rose and Coach Jim. Living legends
The coolest memory that I have of Bill, is the image of him at ASCA with all of the MVN coaches sitting in a circle talking about what they learned at the clinic that specific day!
I also remember when he had Chloe Sutton swim in her MVN practice suit at Junior Nationals up in Seattle while everyone else was in their rubber suits!
Its nice he is retiring but there goes the Mission Viejo program since he and Mark S were the best coaches of the area.
yep your right those two are the only good coaches in the area. So Cal happens to be the fastest swimming area on the plant by luck.
I met South Orange County and Orange County. So Calif is far from the fastest. Lots of good swimmers in other parts of the state and other states these days. It was at it height in the 1970’s.
In the 1970’s, few swimmers came from North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, like they do today.
15 HS girls from OC went 52 or better today at PRELIMS of D1 CIF. D2 is tomorrow and I know probably 10 more will also go that fast.
The CIF-ss d1 meet is the fastest high school meet in the nation. The 2nd fastest is the D2 meet. No other State meet is as fast, Texas gets close.
There is good swimmers all over the country, just more of them in OC and surrounding areas.
Not to throw water on your parade, but it would make sense that California has the most fast swimmers as they have the most people by almost 12 million over 2nd place Texas.
I think MVN will be fine
Wow, I can’t believe you left out double 1976 Olympic gold medalist and 1978 World Champion Mike Bruner from Coach Rose’s stable of champions. Bruner was a many times national champion under the wing of Coach Rose as well as becoming a two time Olympian (1976/1980). You really need to rewrite this article and put in Mike Bruner.
Agree Re MBrunner! Too long ago for the writer?
