Bruton High School won the VHSL Class 2 title on February 17th behind a team effort. Depth was what put Bruton over the edge in team scoring, as they only 2 events on the day, although one was a relay.
Bruton won the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, where Amari Randall, Chloe Check, Izzie Check, and Chloe Anderson teamed up for a 3:47.65. Unfortunately, the splits got messed up, so we can’t analyze the race that way.
Chloe Check, a junior, also won the 100 breast with a 1:08.86, touching first and as the only swimmer in the field under 1:10. Check swam a very tight race, posting a 33.09 on the first 50, and coming home in 35.77.
Glenvar had a great meet, winning the 200 free relay, and taking a pair of individual events. In the 200 free relay, Delaney Eller (28.00), Carly Wilkes (26.91), Adrianna Hall (27.02), and Claire Griffith (24.42) combined for a 1:46.35, winning the race by a comfortable 1.52-second margin.
Claire Griffith also picked up a pair of individual titles on the day, starting with the 50 free. In the race, Griffith clocked a 24.33, breaking the VHSL Class 2 record, which stood at 24.49 from last year. She went on to swim a 53.04 to win the 100 free, touching first by 1.80 seconds.
George Wythe also had a really good showing, taking a relay and two individual titles as well. Tatum Robinson led the way for her team, winning the 100 fly and 200 IM. In the 100 fly, Robinson swam a 57.86, dominating the heat by touching first by 3 seconds. She opened up a lead on the first 50 of the race, but it was the 2nd 50 where Robinson really took over and blew the race open. In the 200 IM, she swam a 2:08.88, touching first by 9 seconds.
George Wythe took the 200 medley relay, where Morgan Dalton (29.66), Robinson (31.98), Lydia Sprano (28.48), and Carrie Sage Dalton (28.13) teamed up for a 1:58.25, winning by almost 5 seconds.
Galax junior Mia Llamas took a pair of events, winning the 200 free and 100 back. In the 200 free, Llamas established a big early lead, and kept growing it throughout the finish, touching in 1:57.96. Notably, Llamas posted the fastest split in the field on all 4 of the 50s in the race. She went on to take the 100 back with a 59.84, getting into the wall over 2 seconds ahead of the anyone else.
Clark County HS’ Kayla Sprincis swam to a monumental victory in the 500 free. Sprincis, a senior, swam a 5:20.38, nearly lapping the field, and finishing 32 seconds ahead of the runner-up. She had already established a 3-second lead at the 50 mark, and would only grow that lead throughout the race.
Tommie Bloomer (Radford) won diving with a score of 328.90.
