Eoin Corby has set a new Irish Junior Short Course Record in the 100m breaststroke at the Munster Short Course Championships in Limerick, Ireland. 17 year-old Corby swam a time of 1.00.67, breaking Michael Dawson’s previous record of 1.00.96 which stood for ten years. Corby’s previous best time was 1.01.04, which he swam at the 2018 Irish Short Course Championships last December.
Corby had an impressive summer this year, reaching finals at both the 2019 LEN European Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia and the 2019 World Junior Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He narrowly missed out on a medal in the 100m breaststroke final in Kazan, finishing fourth with a lifetime best of 1.01.05. He finished 5th in the same race at World Juniors, in a slightly slower time of 1.01.16.
On the back of these performances, Corby was named as one of 15 athletes on the Irish National Performance Pathway Squad. The group have been selected based on their current times in relation to the projected 2024 Olympic Games qualifying standards.
Corby now holds five Irish Junior records in total, which he will be able to continue to collect until he turns 19: three long course in the 50m breaststroke (28.40), 100m breaststroke (1.01.05) and the 200m breaststroke (2.13.35), as well as the short course 200m breaststroke (2.11.96) and now the 100m he broke this past weekend.
At the Swim Ireland Awards held on September 28th this year, Eoin Corby won the Male Performance Pathway Athlete of The Year.
