VALPARAISO, Ind. – Eastern Illinois men’s (3-4) and women’s (3-4) swimming totaled 18 first place finishes against the Beacons of Valparaiso and Wabash College. The men’s team defeated Valpo and Wabash to improve to 3-4 on the season while the women’s team defeated Valparaiso.

In the first event of the dual meet, the women’s 400 medley relay team of Olivia Viele, Corinne Staneart, Kaylan Ottosen, and Camryn Lewis posted a first place time of 4:03.88.
Staneart would go on to win two more individual first place finishes in the meet. Her first came in the 200 yard freestyle where she posted a time of 2:02.55. She then followed that performance with win in the 100 breaststroke with a final time of 1:08.45.
Another member of the 400 medley team, Viele, would go on to win two more events of her own. In the 100 butterfly, she would take first with a time of 1:00.50. Viele would also win and set a new personal record in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.15.
In the 1000 yard freestyle, Kennedy Darensbourg would capture another first place finish with a time of 11:04.28 which was 51 seconds faster than any other competitor. She also would take home a first place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:21.78).
Lewis would also aid the women’s to a victory with a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.64. Genevieve Biberdorf also captured a first place finish in the 400 IM (4:51.22).
Autumn Grinter made an appearance on victory lane with a first place time in the 100 freestyle (54.37).
On the men’s side, Spencer Wilson racked up his second victory of the season in the 1000 free with a time of 9:58.55 which marked his best time of the season. Like Darensbourg, he would also take first in the 500 free later on with a time of 4:48.93.
By just .22 seconds, Conner Colston squeaked out the win in the 200 yard freestyle with a finals time of 1:44.25. Dismas Dillon took home a second place finish in the 50 free after he finished with a 21.87.
Sebastian Rosales earned himself a first place in the 100 yard butterfly while posting a time of 52.58. Andrew Herman returned to the pool after an impressive last meet to take first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 53.62. He also took home the gold in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.76.
To conclude Friday’s meet, both 200 medley teams took home first places to seal the victory for the Panthers. The women’s team of Lewis, Grinter, Izzy Glasgow and Bella Earle finished with a time of 1:40.59. The men’s team of Dillon, Colston, Jacob Wienants and Zach Clark finished with a time of 1:27.61.
EIU swimming will be back in action next Thursday, Jan. 26 as they host Southern Illinois at Padovan pool at 5 p.m.

The Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams continued preparations for their respective conference championships on Friday as the Beacons welcomed Eastern Illinois and Wabash to the Valparaiso Aquatic Center. The men’s squad split the double dual, defeating Wabash as freshman Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) earned an individual event win and led off a relay win as well.
How It Happened
- Oostman joined with sophomore Brendan Stangeland (West Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne) and fellow rookies Garrett Hoppman (Midland, Texas/Midland) and Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) to get the meet off to a strong start Friday evening, as the quartet came home first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:33.65.
- Later in the meet, Oostman touched the wall first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.34. The Beacons went 1-2 in that event, with sophomore Andrew Berzai (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) claiming runner-up honors with a time of 4:24.05.
- Beyond their participation in the first-place relay quartet, Hoppman and Stangeland each registered a second-place finish individually as well. Hoppman posted a time of 53.19 in the 100 fly to place second, while Stangeland was runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.15.
- Freshman Dathan Wolf (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) notched a second in the 100 back, touching the wall in 55.60.
- On the women’s side, freshman Emma Schmidt (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley) led the way with a pair of second-place finishes. Schmidt recorded her first runner-up showing in the 400 IM with a time of 4:52.32, and later completed the 500 free in 5:26.78 to earn second in that event as well.
- Three other Beacon women’s swimmers tallied second-place finishes. Freshman Fiona Merritt (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) claimed second in the 1000 free (11:55.25), senior Sophie Morelock (Milan, Mich./Milan) took second in the 100 back (1:01.96) and freshman Natalie Eaton (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:12.03).
- In the double-dual scoring on the men’s side, Valpo defeated Wabash, 127-104, and fell to Eastern Illinois, 121-83. On the women’s side, EIU topped Valpo, 149-51.
Next Up
Valpo concludes a busy two-day stretch on Saturday with a tri-meet at Saint Louis, with Little Rock also swimming. The meet is slated to begin at 2 p.m.

The Wabash College swimming and diving team competed against two NCAA Division I programs Friday evening at Valparaiso University. The Little Giants lost to the host Beacons of Valparaiso 127-104 and were defeated by Eastern Illinois University 137-93.
Caleb McCarty swam to a pair of first-place finishes at the three-way meet. He won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 21.35. He added a victory in the 100 freestyle by completing the race in a season-best time of 46.71.
Ethan Johns placed second in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in 1:44.47. Johns added a fourth-place finish in the 100 free at 48.60.
Xander Straw captured second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle after touching the wall for the final time in 10:07.77. He finished the 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.59. Barret Smith placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.22.
William Morris won both diving events for Wabash, with teammate Justin To earning two second-place finishes. Morris won the one-meter competition with 171.70 points, with To placing second with 136.05 points. Morris scored 174 points to win the three-meter diving event. To scored 136.80 points for a second-place finish.
On Saturday, Wabash continues its competition against NCAA Division I opponents with an 11 a.m. dual meet at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis against IUPUI.
