Penn Topples West Chester With Friday Night Sweep At Sheerr Pool

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team made a grand return to Sheerr Pool Friday evening, getting the 176-120 victory over West Chester to start the weekend off on a high note.

The Quakers (4-4, 2-4 Ivy) racked up seven first-place finishes with two podium sweeps against the Golden Rams (5-3) as Anna Kalandadze led the way with a pair of victories in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley.

*Kalandadze once again excelled in her events with a 1:53.68 in the 200 free. Also in that event, Bridget O’Leary in second position (1:54.49). Kalandadze also tallied a win in the 400 IM (4:26.68) where she narrowly beat out teammate Anna Boeckman (4:27.50) and Ellen Holmquist (4:31.33).

*Amelia Girotto looked the part in the first individual event of the evening with a victory in the 1000 free with a time of 10:08.83. Boeckman took third at 10:23.30.

*Vanessa Chong won her race in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.31. It was neck-and-neck between Chong and Amber Smith, who clocked in at 58.81 to finish second.

*Izzy Pytel returned to action Friday with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.25). It was a close call between first, second and third as Hannah Liu got third with a time of 1:06.97.

*The second 1-2-3 finish went the way of Sydney Bergstrom in the 500 free where she timed in at 5:01.93 to beat O’Leary (5:07.09) for second and Lyndsey Reeve (5:09.38) for third.

*Joy Jiang (second) and Emma Stolberg (third) both landed on the podium for the 200-yard butterfly.

*Margot Kaczorowski earned back-to-back runner-up finishes in the 50 free (24.06) and 100 free (51.63). Abby Wickersham got third in both events as well with times of 24.21 and 51.84, respectively.

*The 200-yard backstroke had Sophie Henriksen get second with a 2:09.55 and Hadley DeBruyn at third (2:10.64).

*Liu got second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.39).

*Chong picked up second in the 100 fly (55.98) with Smith finishing in third (57.51).

*It was a second and third-place finish for the 200-yard medley relay as Smith, Pytel, Chong and Kaczorowski timed in at 1:46.20 and Henriksen, Rachel Blackwell, Reeve and Wickersham swam a 1:48.80.

*The night ended with a Quaker victory in the 200 free relay as the tandem of Wickersham, Smith, Anna Moehn and Kaczorowski placed first (1:35.33).

Penn hosts Harvard at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sheerr Pool for the final Ivy League regular season meet and Senior Day, where a ceremony will take place prior to the events.

PHILADELPHIA – It was a dominant effort from the get-go as the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team recorded nine victories en route to a 191-99 win over West Chester Friday night at Sheerr Pool.

The Quakers are now 4-3-1 overall as the regular season nears the end and have now won back-to-back dual meets. It was freshman James Curreri who did all the talking on Friday with a couple wins in the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle.

*In both of Curreri’s wins, Penn recorded 1-2-3 finishes. He timed in at 50.14 in the 100 back to beat out Mark McCrary (50.50) for second and Daniel Gallagher (50.83) for third. In the 500 free, Curreri swam a 4:39.92 to win, followed up by Jason Schreiber (4:41.53) and Peter Lee (4:49.85).

*Truman Armstrong returned to the pool and got a win in the 200 free (1:42.55). Teammate Ryan McGuirk took second at 1:44.37.

*Penn’s second 1-2-3 finish of the meet came in the 100-yard breaststroke as Neil Simpson (56.90) got first, Daniel Trincher (57.66) picked up second and Alan Cherches finished third (58.15).

*Sam Donchi got the win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.94 while Lee got second with a 1:52.58.

*Matthew Dieffenthaller took first place in the 50 free (20.98), edging out Alex Fu (21.01) for second.

*Ben Feldman scored a victory in the 100 free (46.48) with Andrew Dai (47.04) placing in second position.

*Jack Hamilton swam a quick 1:53.92 to grab the win while Armstrong finished third with a time of 1:55.91.

*The most lopsided event came in the 200 breast despite a 1-2-3 finish for the Quakers. Matthew Fallon earned the win with a fast time of 1:54.10. Matt Leblanc got second with a 2:07.95 while Neo Matsuyama finished in third (2:08.69).

*Kevin Keil nearly took down West Chester’s Paul Demesy in the 1,000 free with a second-place time of 9:28.90, but Demesy was slightly quicker at 9:28.36. Michael Foley took third place (9:45.26) in the event.

*The team of McCrary, Simpson, Fu and Feldman placed second in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming a mark of 1:31.55.

The Quakers round out the Ivy slate against Harvard at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, also hosting Senior Day with a special pre-meet ceremony beginning at 9:55 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA – Fifth-year senior Ann Carozza (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) won three separate events, but it was not enough for West Chester’s women to overcome host University of Pennsylvania Friday night at Sheerr Pool. The Quakers topped the Golden Rams, 176-120 in their non-league showdown.

Carozza won the 100-yard freestyle as well as both the 100 and 200 butterfly events. She also swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that won first place to lead off the meet Friday. Carozza has already hit NCAA qualifying times in all three events. Yet, she continues to put up some of the best times in the country. She won the 100 free in 50.88 seconds while taking the 100 fly in 55.07 and the 200 fly in 2 minutes, 1.14 seconds.

West Chester swimmers won a total of six individual races, plus the 200 medley relay to put forth a strong showing. Maddy Koehle (State College, Pa./State College Area) won the 200 backstroke in 2:23.84 while placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.81). Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won the 50 free (24.04) with a second place in the 1000 free (10:17.26). Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) won the 200 backstroke in 2:09.15 for West Chester’s other individual victory.

Lila DiCarlo (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) led off the 200 medley relay that was a winner. But, she also placed third in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 back.

The diving competition had incomplete results at press time.

West Chester gets right back in the pool Saturday morning when it welcomes New York University to Graham Natatorium for another non-league affair on Senior Day.

PHILADELPHIA – Three individual first-place finishes and a relay that won highlighted West Chester’s non-league swim meet at the University of Pennsylvania’s Sheerr Pool Friday night. The host Quakers downed the Golden Rams, 191-99.

Paul Demesy (Saint Ulrich, France) topped the field in the 1000-yard freestyle touching the wall in 9 minutes, 28.36 seconds while Kolos Nagy (Szazhalombatta, Hungary) won the 400 individual medley and Dalton Fink (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won the 100 butterfly. The 200 free relay consisting of Devin Metzgar (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus)Logan Brockway (York, Pa./Dallastown)Tyler Hall (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Nolan Benner (Green Lane, Pa./Boyertown) was also a winner Friday.

Demesy also finished right behind Nagy in the 400 IM with a time of 4:12.62. Nagy recorded a winning time of 4:11.19. Nagy was also second in the 200 backstroke. Benner and Metzgar registered third-place showings in the 100 free and 200 free, respectively, in addition to helping that relay to a win at the end of the meet. Fink placed third in the 50 free to go along with his win in the 100 fly. Meanwhile, Gabe Laslo (Wind Gap, Pa./Nazareth Academy) was third in the 200 fly.

The diving competition had incomplete results at press time.
