Eyes in the swimming world were on Minneapolis, Minnesota this morning for the 100 fly prelims as it set up a rematch between Texas’ Joseph Schooling and defending champion Caeleb Dressel of Florida in tonight’s final. Since he hasn’t swum the event much this season, Dressel stepped up for the first heat. He took it out way under record pace (21.03) in 20.32, but shut it down on the back half to touch in 44.37. That was the 9th fastest performance of all time.
Indiana’s Vini Lanza also had an impressive performance this morning, putting up a lifetime best 44.66 to become the 8th fastest performer ever. He’s now the 2nd seed for finals behind Dressel, while Schooling is the 3rd seed in 44.97.

I would watch out more the Europeans kids than Schooling for Tokyo..

Schooling is doomed. 20.32 going out in prelims???? That’s nuts!!!!!!!!!! If he splits like he did last year on the back-half (not to mention the long turns), I would not be surprised if he cracks 43.
