Defending Olympic Champion in the 100 fly Dana Vollmer has gotten some positive signs ahead of next weekend’s Pro Swim Series at Minneapolis.
According to a post on her Facebook page, Vollmer says that she swam a 58.7 in the 100 meter fly and a 56.5 in the 100 meter free. That time in the 100 fly, if true, is the fastest that she’s been since returning from an extended absence from the sport, albeit an unofficial time in practice. Vollmer was a 58.9 over the summer at the USA Swimming National Championships.

After the 2013 World Championships, Vollmer stepped away from elite racing and gave birth to her first child, Arlen Jackson Grant, on March 6th.
Vollmer has been hyper-focused on the 100 fly since her return (it’s the only event she’s swum), and climbed to 9th in the U.S. rankings by the end of last season. Once again in Minneapolis, she’s entered in just that single event and enters as the 11th seed.
In my last 2016 US olympic team barometer, I’ve picked Worrell and Vollmer.
I’m confident in her ability to build up and improve her times meet after meet to swim a 56 high/57 low at olympic trials. She has the natural speed to do it.

My Rio gold prediction would be the same as Bobo’s.

Great sign going into Omaha/Rio. 100 fly is going to be one of the most exciting races. Worrell, Vollmer, McLaughlin, and Stewart will have to brawl it out for those two spots. Others to watch include Lee, Bayer and Nelson.
Lee and Bayer don’t have enough speed to go 57 low or better, which is what it’ll take to be top 2. I believe 56 something will make it, and maybe someone will be left out and go a 56. Right now, I think it’s Worrell, McLaughlin, and looks like Vollmer in no particular order.
