Claire Tuggle, recently turned 15-year-old, took 4th in the women’s 400 free at US Nationals tonight. Tuggle swam a 4:07.85, blowing away both her prelims swim of 4:10.37 and her previous best time of 4:10.11, which she swam at the 2018 Speedo Junior Nationals meet.
In addition to being a big time drop for Tuggle, that swim ranks Tuggle 5th all-time for 15-16 girls, an age group she only just recently moved up into. Here is a split comparison between Tuggle’s race tonight, her race this morming, and her previous best from last Summer:
2019 US Nationals Finals | 2019 US Nationals Prelims | 2018 Speedo Junior Nationals | |
50 | 28.94 | 29.22 | 29.36 |
100 | 31.46 (1:00.13) | 31.54 (1:00.76) | 31.42 (1:00.78) |
150 | 31.84 (1:32.24) | 32.06 (1:32.82) | 31.81 (1:32.59) |
200 | 31.66 (2:03.90) | 31.77 (2:04.59) | 31.82 (2:04.41) |
250 | 31.42 (2:35.32) | 32.02 (2:36.61) | 31.70 (2:36.11) |
300 | 31.35 (3:06.67) | 31.82 (3:08.43) | 31.86 (3:07.97) |
350 | 31.05 (3:37.72) | 31.46 (3:39.89) | 31.83 (3:39.80) |
400 | 30.13 | 30.48 | 30.31 |
FINAL TIME | 4:07.85 | 4:10.37 | 4:10.11 |
If anything is apparent from these 3 race comparisons, it’s that Claire Tuggle has her 400 free race plan down pat. She remains incredibly consistent with her splits across the board. Unlike many other instances where we do split comparisons, the difference in Tuggle’s race tonight versus this morning wasn’t just that she went out faster, or came home faster. Rather, she just split a little bit faster on every single tonight versus what she did this morning.
Here is the current top 5 all-time for 15-16 girls:
- Katie Ledecky (2013) – 3:59.82
- Janet Evans (1987) – 4:05.45
- G Ryan (2012) – 4:07.26
- Kim Linehan (1978) – 4:07.73
- Claire Tuggle (2019) – 4:07.85
Well she still has two more years to get faster by 2.5sec to stand between two legends: Ledecky and Evans.
