INDIANAPOLIS— The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams opened their season on the road, recording 15 event wins in the dual meet against the University of Indianapolis on Saturday.

“For our first meet of the season, I think we saw a lot of promise from a young team,” head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said. “There was a lot of energy and excitement around the start of the season and our returning squad helped set the tone for competing against a deep UIndy team.”

The UC women’s team won 158 to136, while the UC men’s team fell short 161.5 to 138.5. This is the sixth time in a row that UC women have won the dual since 2017.

Freshman Elizabeth Noble was the lone UC diver to claim a victory she won the one-meter dive with a score of 224.93 points.

Freshman Sophie Curtis in the 100-yard freestyle (52:67) and Ella Chown in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.74) round out the rest of the freshman outright winners, while freshman Ingrid Fretz tied for first with UC sophomore Maddy Hensler in the women’s 500-yard freestyle (5:10.54).

Women’s team captains juniors Jessica Davis and Logan Lawhorn also won their events. Davis won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.98 and Lawhorn won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.89.

Reigning American Athletic Conference Male Swimmer of the Year, senior Michael Balcerak, picked up right where he left off. Balcerak claimed two event wins, by winning both the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.17) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.30).

Freshman Brogan Robinson also showed his prowess by winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.18.

Juniors Tommy Eaton and Hunter Gubeno each took home gold. Eaton won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.42, while Gubeno recorded a time of 1:50.54, winning the 200-yard backstroke.

INDIANAPOLIS—The UIndy swimming & diving teams opened their 2022-23 season by hosting the University of Cincinnati Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds earned a split versus the Division I Bearcats, with the men taking their dual, 161.5-138.5, and the women falling by the score of 158-136. UIndy and Cincy have now faced off in an early-season dual in each of the last six seasons.

Graduate student and 13-time All-American Kaitlyn McCoy had a successful meet, leading all Hounds with three individuals wins. The Phoenix native touched the wall first in both the 100 and 20 backstrokes as well as the 200 IM, scoring 27 points in the process.

Johanna Buys (50 free) and Emilia Colti-Dumitrescu (1000 free) also earned event wins for the UIndy women.

The UIndy men matched the women’s total of five individual wins. Cedric Buessing cruised to a victory in the 1000 free. Later he finished second only to teammate Christian Hedeen in the 500 free.

On the other end of the spectrum in the sprints, Diego MasJoao Silva and Aqeel Joseph went 1-2-3 in the 50 free. Jeron Thompson took first in the 100 back and Serge Ahadzhanian won the 100 fly.
