China’s Qin Haiyang Clocks 55.73 100 Breast Asian Record In Front Of Home Crowd

2024 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP-SHANGHAI

Hardly a race went by on night one of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai without some sort of record going down.

In the men’s 100m breast, it was China’s Qin Haiyang who did the damage, firing off a new national and continental standard of 55.73 en route to gold

Qin scored the sole sub-56 time of the field, with Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich, racing as an independent athlete, scoring silver in 56.07 and fellow Chinese athlete Sun Jiajun bagging bronze in 56.16.

As for Qin, the 25-year-old earned his first-ever sub-56 second result tonight, with his winning time overtaking his previous lifetime best and Chinese record of 56.31. That former PB was established at the 2022 Chinese Swimming Championships.

His time this evening also shaved .04 off the previous Asian Record of 55.77 Yuya Hinomoto put up at the 2021 Japanese Championships.

Comparing his splits, Qin’s effort this evening was quicker than 2022 from the get-go, hitting 11.71 as his first 25m compared to 12.04 previously. He carried that speed into the 2nd leg before evening out with his former PB.

Qin’s New Chinese Record – 55.73 Qin’s Old Chinese Record – 56.31
11.71 12.04
14.40 14.65
14.65 14.64
14.97 14.98

Qin now ranks as the 6th-fastest SCM 100 breaststroke performer in history.

  5. Nicolo Martinenghi (ITA) – 55.63, 2021

Qin is the current World Record holder in the LCM 200 breast with the 2:05.48 he turned in at the 2023 World Championships.

He had a relatively disappointing 2024 Olympic Games, however, settling for 7th in the 100m breast (59.50) and 10th in the 200m breast (2:09.96) despite entering Paris as a heavy favorite medal contender in both races.
