On the third day of the 2023 Spanish Open, Camila Rebelo cracked a Portuguese Record in the women’s 200 back, winning the event in 2:09.84. Not only did Rebelo crack the FINA ‘A’ cut of 2:11.08 with the swim, she also took 0.57 seconds off her previous Portuguese Record of 2:10.41, which she set at the 2022 Mediterranean Games.

Interestingly, Rebelo was actually out a touch slower on the first half of the race this week than she was last year, splitting 1:04.39 on the first 100, compared to a 1:04.29 last year. The difference this time around is that she came home much faster, putting together a 1:05.45 on the second 100m of the race, outdoing the 1:06.12 she came home in on her previous record performance.
With the swim, Rebelo became the first Portuguese woman to go under 2:10 in the LCM 200 back. Rebelo is also the Portuguese Record holder in the women’s LCM 100 back, having clocked a 1:00.66 in the event at the European Championships last August. Notably, Rebelo was a bit off in the 100 back on the first day of the Spanish Open, swimming a 1:01.48.
The performance comes amidst a complete rewriting of the Portuguese National Record book this week. Between the Portugal Open and the Spanish Open, six Portuguese Records have already fallen. Diogo Ribeiro is responsible for three of those records, having cracked his own national marks in the men’s 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly at the Portugal Open. The women’s 50 free and 100 free have also gone down, as Ana Rodrigues and Francisca Martins have also cracked those marks at the Portugal Open.
