Kathleen-Hersey.usacapjpgNew England’s favorite swimming son, Ian Crocker, and the Southern Belle of Butterfly, Kathleen Hersey, will be building champions and giving back to area swimmers in Sanford, Maine on Sunday May 31st at the Sanford-Springvale YMCA. At 9:30-11:30am for the 10 and unders and 1-5pm for the 11 and over crowd, Maine’s future champions will learn from two of the great butterfly racers in US history.

Kathleen-HerseyKathleen Hersey made the Olympics in 2008 and 2012 in the 200m butterfly, finishing in London with a lifetime best of 2:05.78 Kathleen was also a high school and collegiate record holder in the 100 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 back and 200 IM. Ian Crocker is famously known as one of Michael Phelps’s greatest rivals in the 100m fly, as they traded world records and world titles back and forth for 6 years from 2002 to 2008. Many consider Ian’s world record set in Barcelona 2005 (before the rubber suit era) of :50.40 as the purest and fastest 100m fly of all time.

ian crocker headshot, MOBSCIan Crocker is a Master Clinician having taught in over 100 cities since retiring after Beijing 2008. Having overcome extreme shyness and race anxiety, Ian can relate well to young kids dealing with obstacles in their own swimming journey. Kathleen Hersey is gifted not just with being an expert in all 4 strokes but her smile, enthusiasm and experience of overcoming adversity will help kids BREAKout! to the next level in goal setting, racing and keeping the sport fun!

As always, clinics include in-water demonstration and instruction on all 4 strokes, starts and turns, talks on training, racing, nutrition, goal setting and motivation. Every participant gets a t-shirt, 2 dvd’s, notebook, draw string swim bag and a picture with an Olympic Medal!

If you live in the New England area and would like to attend either the 9:30am to 11:30am clinic for 7 to 10 year olds or the 1pm to 5pm clinic for 11 to 18 year olds, you can register in person on Sunday or sign up online at www.sanfordymca.org

Another Olympian, 1976 100 fly gold medalist Matt Vogel, also coaches in Maine.

As an up-and-coming butterflyer, I am happy that Ian Crocker is finally coming back to Maine to give back to his community. This is nice, but let’s remember that he cancelled last minute when he was inducted into the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. Very disappointing.
