It’s been over a decade since the nation of South Korea brought home any hardware from a Long Course World Championships.
Tonight, on day three of the 2022 edition in Budapest, Hungary, it was 19-year-old Hwang Sunwoo who watered the nation’s hardware drought, firing off a time of 1:44.47 to wrap up silver behind winner David Popovici of Romania in the men’s 200m free.

Hwang had already bagged 200m free gold at the 2021 FINA Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, but his earning the long course silver medal here marks the first tally in Korea’s column since Park Tae Hwan nailed 400m free gold in 2011.
Hwang still has the men’s 100m free yet to go here in Budapest so the teen may add to the kitty before all is said and done. Regardless, he has cemented himself as the next big South Korean star since Park, giving him fuel to continue along his upward swimming trajectory.
