Bruton Girls, Glenvar Boys Both Stay On Top At Virginia 1&2 state meet

There was no dethroning of team champions at this year’s Virginia High School League Class 1 & 2 state meet.

For the fourth straight year, the Bruton girls team won the meet, while the Glenvar boys won their second straight title to make it a double-repeat.

GIRLS’ RECAP

Bruton swept the relay events, starting in the 200 medley relay when the team of Maddie Hubbard, Izzie Check, Jade Bevans and Dori Veith won that event in a time of 1:56.96.

The team of Peyton Cleary, Bevans, Veith and Alyssa White won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:42.32.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Cleary, Hubbard, Check and White won in a time of 3:42.46.

Three individuals from Bruton won events.

White, a junior, won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.96. A senior, Check won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.21.  Cleary is a junior who won the 50 freestyle in a personal best time of 23.43.

The individual standouts were Strasburg sophomore Emily Davis and Radford senior Evie Grim.

Davis won the 200 individual medley (2:12.25) and the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 57.80, while Grim won the 100 freestyle in a personal best time of 52.94 and the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.49.

Radford sophomore Jill Grim won the diving event with 436.75 points. Appomattox sophomore Peyton Temple won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:14.72.

BOYS’ RECAP

Glenvar won two relays and three individual events en route to the title.

The team of Aspen Thompson, Landon Cairns, Connor Wilkes and Avery Thompson won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.75, and the team of Thompson, Alex McIlwain, Cairns and Wilkes won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:34.46.

Cairns won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:07.96, Wilkes won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:09.83 and Thompson won the 100 backstroke in a personal best time of 55.88.

Cairns is a junior, Wilkes is a senior and Thompson is a freshman.

The top individuals were Poquoson junior Tony DeVries and Martinsville sophomore Trent Hollandsworth.

DeVries won the 200 freestyle in a personal best time of 1:46.37 and the 50 free in 21.84.

Hollandsworth won the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 51.73 and the 100 breaststroke in 55.50.

Connor Brown of Virginia High won the diving event with 318.5 points and Martinsville sophomore Sherman Dillard won the 100 freestyle in a personal best time of 50.52.

The 400 freestyle relay was won by Radford’s team of Hollandsworth, Sam Khandan-Barani, Ian Mayer and Ben Marinaro in a time of 3:33.36.
