Brookwood Boys, Girls Roll To Sweep At Georgia 6A meet

It was another sweep for the Brookwood program at the Georgia 6A state meet in early February.

For the third time in eight years, Brookwood swept the boys and girls titles, with the boys winning its first title since 2019 and the girls repeating as champions.

GIRLS’ RECAP

The sprint freestyle queen was Brookwood junior Nicole Amike, who won the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.18 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.94. Both times were personal bests.

She also swam anchor for Brookwood’s winning team in the 200 freestyle relay, which won with a time of 1:35.57 and also included Sophie Hamilton, Hailey Dopson and Amelia Moore.

The other two-time individual champion was North Gwinnett junior McKenzie Jenny, who won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:51.00 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:55.45.

Harrison won both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Reagan Burton, Evelyn Jezerinac, Addie Rice and Anijoli Mohanty won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:44.97. The same group but different order of Rice, Mohanty, Jezerinac and Burton later won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:34.55.

Jezerinac had a breaststroke split of 27.56 during the relay, then won the 100 breaststroke in a personal best time of 1:01.94.

Other individual winners were:

  • Natalia Amescua. The sophomore from Peachtree won the 200 IM in a time of 2:02.96.
  • Jewel Hart. A junior from Colquitt, she won the diving event with 613.45 points.
  • Addie Speigner. The freshman from West Forsyth captured the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 55.62.
  • Hailey Dopson. The Brookwood senior and Georgia signee repeated as champion in the 100 back in a time of 55.13.

BOYS’ RECAP

Future Cal Golden Bear Baylor Stanton finished off his high school career in style by first winning the 200 IM, tying his own state record set on Feb. 5 by swimming a time of 1:45.01 to repeat in that event. Stanton later repeated as state champion in the 100 back with a time of 47.46.

Stanton’s personal best times in the 200 IM (1:4404) and 100 back 46.57 were set in December 2023.

Stanton also swam leadoff for Brookwood’s winning team in the 200 medley relay, which finished in a time of 1:32.10. The other team members were Ean Silvers, Collin Severtson, and Wyatt Hinson.

North Forsyth junior Owen Cooper was the other individual to win multiple events, as he swept the sprint freestyles. He won the 50 freestyle in a personal best time of 20.64 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.14.

Brookwood’s team of Thien Nguyen, Michael Stanton, Noah Silvers and Hinson won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:25.37, while West Forsyth’s team of Nathan Fedke, Colton Carter, Cade Anderson and Ty McGinn took the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:06.70.

Other individual winners were:

  • Oliver Van Peteghem. A junior from South Forsyth, he won the 200 freestyle in a personal best time of 1:39.36.
  • Tuck Gregory. The Colquitt senior won the diving event with 757.55 points.
  • Carson Waters. A sophomore from North Gwinnett, Waters won the 100 butterfly in a personal best time of 48.82.
  • Michael Stanton. The sophomore from Brookwood took the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:31.23.
  • Luke Watkins. A senior from Campbell, he won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 57.05.
