Ball State Women Roll Past IUPUI, Jaguar Men Edge Out Cardinals

INDIANAPOLIS – – It was a good day for the Ball State women’s swimming & diving squad which won 11 of 16 events on its way to a 189-108 victory at IU Indy Friday evening at the IU Natatorium.

Unfortunately, the men’s squad was not a lucky, suffering a 235-64 setback to the host Jaguars.

On the women’s side, the Cardinals started with a dominating effort in the 200 medley relay and never looked back. Junior Alyssa Messenger opened the relay with a 50 backstroke split of 27.03 and the Cardinals led the rest of the way with sophomore Julia Ofman, freshman Anna Keen and junior Payton Kelly helping produce a final time of 1:44.92.

It was the first of three event wins for Messenger, who also went on to sweep the backstroke events with a time of 57.65 in the 100 and 2:04.16 in the 200. Among the relay participants, Keen would add an individual win in the 50 freestyle (23.69) and Kelly took top honors in the 100 freestyle (52.30).

Three other Cardinals would also pick up a pair of individual wins, including graduate Laura Wright who remained undefeated in the individual breaststroke events with winning times of 1:04.71 in the 100 and 2:21.08 in the 200. Both were season-best efforts.

Sophomore Alexa Von Holtz added a pair of wins to her season total, taking top honors in the 200 butterfly (2:02.62) and 200 IM (2:07.28), while sophomore Leelah Fettig swept the diving events with a score of 253.05 on 1-meter and 242.63 on 3-meter for her first event wins of the season.

On the men’s side, junior Jacob Siewers was Ball State’s top scorer on the day, anchoring the second-place 200 medley relay (1:32.85), while finishing second in both the 100 (46.20) and 200 (1:41.65) freestyle events.

Siewers was joined on the relay by senior Michael Burns, sophomore Aidan Biddle and freshman AJ Friend.

Biddle would also pick up an individual runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke (58.45), while sophomore Malcolm Slater placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:37.97).

Junior Porter Brovont would lead the men’s squad on the diving boards, placing third on both 1-meter (293.03) and 3-meter (297.08).

Both the men’s & women’s swimming squads will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 23, with a 1 p.m. contest at Bellarmine.

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men’s swim and dive team out swam in-state foe, Ball State with a score of 235-64 while the women’s team fell to the Cardinals, 189-108. The men’s team won 16 different events while Emmaleigh Zeitlow led the women’s team with three individual wins.

The men’s team earned their first win of the meet in the 200 medley relay. The relay team of Grayson TidwellZach DrotarHugo Arteaga and Luca Eckert clocked a time of 1:31.35 to earn the first place finish.

During the individual races, Nathan Rariden, Drotar and Eckert each collected two wins. Rariden took first in the 200 free (1:40.53) and 500 free (4:34.89). Drotar earned his two wins in the 100 breast (56.62) and 200 breast (2:04.57). Spencer Koehrn finished behind Drotar in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.24.

Eckert collected wins in the 100 free (45.66) and the 50 free (20.92). Arteaga finished in second in the 50 free with a time of 20.94. The freshman also earned a first-place finish in the 100 fly (49.09). Isaac Wilson took second with a time of 50.30.

The Jags took the top three spots in the 200 fly with Wilson earning the top time of 1:52.22. Will Gorman took second (1:52.50) and Carson Szotek took third (1:53.31). IU Indy also went one-two-three in the 200 back with Ben Kimmel earning first at 1:50.83. Tidwell took second (1:51.10) and Jack Gallob took third (1:53.90).

The Jags earned a one-two-three finish in the 100 back as well with Tidwell taking first (50.59), Keiran Rahmaan with second (51.75) and Gallob in third (51.87). IU Indy took the top three spots in the 400 IM with Luke Dibley earning first (4:05.75), Drotar second (4:05.76) and Tidwell third (4:15.36).

Youssef Magdy also earned a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:36.08.

On the diving boards, Sebastian Otero swept the competition once again with first in the 1-meter (384.75) and the 3-meter (361.05). Adam Schmehl took second in both with a score of 302.55 in the 11-meter and 340.65 in the 3-meter dive.

The men’s team rounded out their scoring with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay. The relay team of Eckert, Gorman, Wilson and Max Gerke clocked a time of 3:04.97 to earn the first-place finish.

On the women’s side, Zietlow led the Jags with three individual wins. She swept the distance events with a time of 10:28.21 in the 1000 free, 4:58.96 in the 500 free and 1:50.08 in the 200 free.

Lillian Brandt also earned a first-place finish with a top time of 56.62 in the 100 fly.

On the boards for the women’s team, Midori Adams took second in both the 1-meter (226.20) and 3-meter (215.48).

The 400 free relay team of Zietlow, Luca McGee, Brandt and Addy Hirsbrunner earned first to finish out the meet for the women’s team with a time of 3:31.30.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to the Jungle for their annual House of Champions meet from November 21-23.
