Another relay, another World Record for the Australian women. Tonight, their team of Madi Wilson, Mollie O’Callaghan, Leah Neale, and Lani Pallister combined for a final time of 7:30.87.
The previous record stood at 7:32.85, which was done by the Netherlands in 2014 at this meet.

Australia held a slight edge over the Netherlands’ record with Wilson’s lead-off, but at the halfway split they were nearly matched. Australia touched at 3:45.96 compared to the Netherlands’ 400 split of 3:45.95. Neale and Pallister opened up the gap in the final two legs, out-splitting the Netherlands by almost two seconds in the last 400 to take down the World Record.
Australia led the rest of the field tonight by over three seconds. Canada took silver with at a 7:34.47, while the United States grabbed bronze with a 7:34.70. The quickest lead-off split of the event was Canada’s Rebecca Smith, who posted a 1:52.15 to break her own Canadian record in the event.
This is the Australian women’s second relay World Record of these SC World Championships. They broke the 4×100 freestyle relay World Record on the first night with a 3:25.43. Australia now holds the World Record in both short course and long course in this event, as well as in the 4×100 freestyle relay.
I know the US couldn’t have won gold, but didn’t we have a better option than Leah Smith? We were within a second of Australia and two ahead of Canada going into the final leg. Not meant as a criticism of Leah more of the coach’s decision.
