Augustana Women Win Third Consecutive NSIC Championship Title

FARGO, N.D. – The Augustana women’s swimming and diving team pulled off the three-peat on Saturday night, claiming its third straight NSIC Championship with a dominant performance on the final day. Avery Lommel was named the Diver of the Meet after earning an NSIC title in the 1m dive and second place finish in the 3m dive.

On Saturday, Augustana won the 200 back and 400 free relay to rack up 944.0 points, ahead of second place Minnesota State with 879 points.

“It was an incredible week of competition,” said head coach Andrew Makepeace “It took a full team effort to pull off a three-peat. We knew it would be a challenge with the competitiveness of our conference, with Minnesota State being a serious threat.”

“We rose to the challenge every day with new people stepping up. I think that made this week mean more because of the amount of contributors it took to get to this spot. This team is special and will go down as the greatest team in conference history.”

The final event, the 400 free, put an exclamation point on Augustana’s win as the quartet of Meesha MontgomeryBryn GreenwaldtSofia Hein and Amaya Street hit a qualifying mark with a time of 3:24.57.

Anna TindallAbby NelsonLibby Breckon and Ava Brogren added big points as well in the 400 free when they won the B final with a time of 3:31.75.

Greenwaldt impressed again individually, this time in the 200 back, the first time swimming in the event this season. Greenwaldt finished second in the prelims during the morning session before cruising to a 1:59.93 time in the final, over two seconds faster than second place, to hit a B cut time and earn an NSIC title.

Also earning points in the 200 back A final was Ella Ward-Zeller and Gracin Larson. Ward-Zeller earned 13 points while finishing sixth with a time of 2:06.00 while Larson swam to a seventh place finish in a time of 2:06.50, earning 12 points.

Lommel solidified diver of the meet honors in the 3m dive, earning a qualifying point total of 429.85 to finish second and earn all-conference honors. Kate Robbins made it to the final as well, earning 12 points and placing seventh with 364.40 points.

Two Vikings earned all-conference honors in the first final of the night, the 100 IM. Angela Chan earned runner-up honors when she cruised to a 58.93 finish while Anna Tindall placed third in 59.07. Gracin Larson reached the A final where she placed seventh with a time of 1:00.29 and Jisella Haskamp earned four points in the B final with a time of 1:01.01.

Meesha Montgomery took all-conference honors when she placed third in the 100 free, hitting a B cut time of 51.33. In the B final, Amaya Street earned nine points with a 51.96 win and a time that would have put her fourth in the A final. Sofia Hein recorded five points with a time of 52.33 and Makoa Montgomery got three points in 52.69.

In the final individual event of the day, Nesrine Jelliti and Ava Brogren swam to all-conference honors in the 200 breast. Jelliti hit a B cut time, placing second in 2:18.87 while Brogren tallied a third place finish with a time of 2:21.54. Also earning points in the A final was Savanna Osowski, whose 2:26.17 placed her seventh. Jisella Haskamp earned a victory in the B final, receiving nine points when she finished in a time of 2:24.90.

The NSIC Champions will await NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships selections to see who will head to Indianapolis, Indiana, March 11-15.
