Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko was on fire at the Mare Nostrum series, dropping numerous lifetime bests and Israeli National Records including a 4:34.87 in the 400 IM. Gorbenko won the European Title last night in a 4:36.05, the 2nd fastest time of her career.

Gorbenko won silver in the event at the 2024 World Championships touching in a 4:37.36, a swim that marked a lifetime best at the time. Since then, she has swam a 4:36.95 at the first Mare Nostrum stop in Canet, then a 4:36.57 at the 2nd stop in Barcelona, then finally dropping a 4:34.87 in the final stop Monaco.

Trained by Tom Rushton, Gorbenko told Coleman Hodges, “I think I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in my life.”

Her time from Monaco currently sits at the 5th fastest performer in the World this year. Gorbenko gave an update on where she feels she is at in her training and where she plans to go with it between now and Paris.

“I just keep improving and even if my times are not my best times now, I’ve been training throughout these Europeans, I did 5K this morning and [this is] just like a training competition for me. So being able to win like that, I’m really happy. I’m going to work on my aerobic next.”

On the second morning of competition in Serbia, Gorbenko swam the fastest time of prelims in the women’s 100 breaststroke touching in a 1:06.15. Gorbenko broke her own Israeli national record with that swim and also got under the Olympic Qualifying time of a 1:06.79. Gorbenko then scratched the event for semifinals.

“My goal in the 100 breaststroke was to get the A cut. So that’s what I did in prelims. Then I did the practice. Like I said, I’m training throughout this week. My goal was just to get the A cut and then scratch. Obviously, it was pretty hard because like, I knew I could win a medal, maybe even a gold one, but that’s what I’m going to do in the Olympics as well, just to get me going for the Olympics. So I need to get used to it.”

The women’s 100 breaststroke and 400 IM will take place with the same schedule in Paris. Just like at the European Championships, prelims and semifinals happen the day before the women’s 400 IM prelims and finals, while the 100 breast final and 400 IM final are in the same session.

Gorbenko confirmed that she plans to race the 100 breaststroke in Paris but said will swim it “probably just in the heats.”
