Air Force Women Top Wyoming, Cowboys Ride To Big Win Over Falcons

LARAMIE, Wyo.– In Mountain West action at Laramie High School, Air Force bested host Wyoming by a score of 161-139, notching 10 first-place finishes in the process.

“What an amazing meet for our women,” said head coach Colleen Murphy. “They earned this victory with their determination, resilience, and heart.”

It was a banner day for Abby Turner, who swam to three first-place finishes. Turner raced to the top spot in the 50Y Free (23.78), the 100Y Free (51.91), and was one of the four women to claim first place in the 200Y Medley Relay. Turner, as well as Kai-Min TsueiKimmy Woolfenden, and Corbyn Cormack swam to a time of 1:44.48.

Cormack also laid claim to victories in the 100Y Fly (56.64) and the 200Y Individual Medley. Tsuei’s afternoon included a win in the 100Y Backstroke (58.18) as well.

Alex Clark led the pool in the 200Y Fly, as her time of 2:07.42 was good for first overall. Abigail Hardy (2:08.10) and Hanani Dona (2:09.00) finished second and third, respectively.

Gabrielle Peltier’s score of 272.70 was best among the nine divers in the three-meter. as Grace Treanor’s score of 263.48 awarded her a second-place finish. Treanor did however post a score of 277.20 in the one-meter, good for first place. Peltier was right behind her teammate with a score of 255.53.

Corinne Yorkman added to the Falcons splendor, racing to a win in the 200Y Backstroke (2:04.58).

“Wyoming is a tough team and and its been a long time since we have a secured a victory over the Cowgirls,” said Murphy. “We so proud of this team and their ability to get up for every single race and dive.”

Next, Air Force will look to carry its momentum to Phoenix where the Falcons will compete against Grand Canyon with action starting on Friday, November 4.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/29/22) – The University of Wyoming men’s swimming & diving team was eager to showcase itself against Air Force on Saturday in dual meet at Laramie High School. They were fired up from the outset, and that only intensified with the conclusion of the first race.

The Cowboys took 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Quinn Cynor, Luke Slabber, Reilly Gilbert and Grant Sloan topped the field, swimming a time of 1:31.05, while the collection of Matt Lang, John Wargin, Gavin Smith and Jakob Borrman weren’t far behind at 1:31.83.

“That (1-2 finish) surprised most the guys on the team,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “To go 1-2 like that, and then they built on it from there. It was all gas no brakes, and that was super fun.”

The Wyoming men rode that to a 194-105 victory over the Falcons.

“They really exceeded a lot of expectations,” Denniston said. “These guys just feed off each other. Being able to count on each other as teammates and supporting and building each other up is part of the culture, and it was showcased today.”

The Wyoming women fell to the Falcons, 161-139.

The 200 medley was just the beginning for the men. They finished 1-2-3 in four events and took 1-2 in a pair of races.

Charlie Clark paced the field in the 1,000-yard freestyle. He swam a 9:53.63, while Caleb Ozenne and Danny Cumnock-Francois went 10:06.52 and 10:08.26, respectively, to finish second and third.

Sloan led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke, going a 56.25. Slabber and Wargin were on his heels, logging times of 57.44 and 57.52, respectively, to record second- and third-place finishes.

Harry Tjaden topped the field in the 200-yard butterfly, boasting a time of 1:52.92. Cam Murphy and Gilbert weren’t far behind, swimming times of 1:54.40 and 1:55.70, respectively, to finished second and third.

Sam Stuckey led the pack of three Cowboys in the 200-yard backstroke. He boasted a time of 1:51.92, while Collins Davis and Andrew Rodriguez clocked in at 1:53.40 and 1:53.71, respectively.

Davis and Lang finished 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke. Davis registered a time of 50.79, and Lang touched in at 51.15.

Wargin also won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.42, and Clark added a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, recording a time of 4:35.87. David Mihalic won the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 1:55.39, and Payton Lee took the 3-meter diving title with a final score of 330.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Smith, Cynor, Slabber and Tjaden capped the day with a win. The boasted a time of 3:04.22.

The Cowgirls also enjoyed a number of 1-2 finishes. The ended the day with a quartet of 1-2 placers.

Maisyn Klimczak and Sage Morton placed 1-2 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Klimczak clocked in at 10:29.91 and Morton finished with a time of 10:32.31.

Carly Palmer and Ellie Fritscher went 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle. Palmer clocked in at 1:54.29, and Fritscher went a 1:54.55.

The 100-yard breaststroke saw a similar Cowgirl dominance. Sydney McKenzie won at 1:04.16, and Brynlee Busskohl took runner-up at 1:04.46.

McKenzie and Busskohl duplicated that performance in the 200-yard breaststroke. McKenzie went 2:20.42, and Busskohl logged a time of 2:22.33.

Klimczak added to her impressive day with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:07.36. The 400-yard freestyle relay, consisting of Kali Franckowiak, Rachael Horne, Mikayla Moore and Carly Palmer, concluded the day with a win, clocking in at 3:28.18.

“I think our women fought hard through every race,” Denniston said. “They looked very tired, but they were putting everything they had into every single race. I have no disappointment in terms of the performance. I think we just have to sharpen up a little bit and get better for next week against CSU.”

The Cowgirls are back in action this upcoming weekend. They travel to Colorado State on Nov. 5, and the Cowboys are off until the SMU Invitational Nov. 17.
