After UConn Drops Swimming, Scott Spear Verbally Commits to Miami (OH)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Scott Spear, who had originally given his verbal commitment to the University of Connecticut before they cut their men’s program, has announced his plans to swim for Miami University in Oxford, Ohio beginning in 2021-22. Spear is from Reading, Massachusetts where he swims for SOLO Aquatics. He will be the second member of his family to swim for a Division I school as his brother is entering his junior year at Drexel University.

I am very excited to continue my academic and athletic career at Miami University! The Miami coaches are dedicated and respected, and the team is one of the most driven and motivated groups in the nation. I can’t wait to contribute towards making this team the best it can be. Go Redhawks!

Spear was a multiple event finalist at the New England Senior Championships last December. He competed in the A-final of the 200 fly, 100 free, 200 free, and 200 IM, as well as the B-final of the 50 free and 100 fly. His highest place came in the 200 free, where he took 4th in 1:40.40.

Last summer Spear competed at the 2019 Junior Nationals meet. He led off SOLO’s 400 free relay that took 29th in 53.60, as well as time trialing the 200 free (1:57.34). He was joined on that relay by current University of Wisconsin freshman and 2019 US Open finalist Andrew Benson.

Last year, at the 2020 Mid-American Swimming and Diving Conference Championships, the Redhawk men finished in 2nd, 80 points behind conference champion Missouri State.

Miami was dominant in the 200 fly, Spear’s best event, last season. The Redhawks swept the podium in the event, as well as taking 6th. While the top two finishers will graduate this year, Spear will have one year with last year’s bronze medalist Ryan Sego.

Spear will join Israeli National team member Yonatan Rosin, Jonah Karshnik, and Diego Pareja as members of the class of 2025.
