The men’s 100m breaststroke final tonight in Paris was a frantic frenzy to the wall as the top 6 competitors all touched within .29 of one another.
When the dust settled, Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi touched first in a time of 59.03 while Great Britain’s Adam Peaty and American Nic Fink hit a time of 59.05 to earn silver simultaneously.
29-year-old Peaty entered these Games as the defending gold medalist from both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
In the former, Peaty topped the Rio podium in a time of 57.13 for a then-world record while his winning time from Tokyo checked in at 57.37.
While tonight’s performances on the whole were the slowest since the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Peaty’s silver makes him the first man to ever earn three Olympic medals in the men’s 100m breast.
There have been a handful of men who have earned 2 medals:
- Peter Evans (AUS) – bronze in 1980 and 1984
- Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) – gold in 2004 and 2008
- Hugues Duboscq (FRA) – bronze in 2004 and 2008
- Brendan Hansen (USA) – silver in 2004, bronze in 2012
- Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) – gold in 2012, silver in 2016
Peaty owns the top 14 times ever produced in this men’s 100m breaststroke and his silver tonight comes after his comeback from taking a break in 2023 to address his mental health.
He posted a time of 57.94 at the British Olympic Trials to rank #2 in the world heading into these Games.
Fun fact: Peaty’s semi final swim in the 2022 commonwealth games on a broken foot would have won gold today!
You have to wonder if his team didn’t get his taper right going into this meet?
It’s the pool. I think everyone is on the same wavelength that these breaststrokers are really screwed by this pool.

Peaty apparently woke up ill this morning – his voice sounded a bit rough in interviews post race. Wonder if he will have time to recover for the relays.
Both Covid and an “unidentified” illness are going through the Olympic Village. Influenza went through the Winter Olympic Village in 1988 and it was devastating. I really hope the outbreaks are as contained as possible and don’t grow or affect the results. It’s such a shame to train one’s whole life and get sick at the absolute worst moment. 🙁

Perhaps could go someway in explaining his big drop off from trials just a few months ago, slow pool notwithstanding.
Perhaps the stress weakened his immune system. People do tend to get sick when they are especially under much pressure.
If only Peaty had gotten closer to his own earlier semifinal time, he could easily gotten that gold. And then be three times gold medallist if he was at his top form.
He woke up ill and then won silver against the best in the world. He’s a beast.
Daniel Gyurta also won at London and got silver at Athens.

The 200 breast is going to be brutal to watch with the state of this pool. I’m guessing Qin scratches to save up for the mixed medley/men’s medley relay and Marchand wins gold.
