The 2024 Short Course World Championships ended a week ago. Athletes from around the world lit up the Duna Arena–a total of 30 world records were broken over six days of competition. Given how otherworldly GW’s performances were, I’m impressed Emma’s 100 best free split held up and Cate’s 100 WR. Also impressed by the fight KD put up in the 50 and Beryl in the 100.
The 100 free WR always had the best chance of surviving GW’s first season of SCM. Her freestyle always falls apart a tiny bit by the end in the long course 100 free, and forcing the UWs has a similar effect. It was a very fast swim, but it wasn’t nearly as dominant as her swims in butterfly.
One other thing I’ve noticed is that although she always dies a bit by the end of her 100m races (especially in long course), she is still somewhat more optimised for them than the 50s, because of her slow reaction time and low stroke rate, and her incredible easy speed.
