14 year-old Thomas Heilman of Cavalier Aquatics took down the 13-14 National Age Group record in the long course 100 fly today at the YMCA Long Course Swimming Festival in Cary, NC.

After going 54.72 prelims, Heilman won tonight’s final by over a second with a time of 54.43. That mark shaves 0.02s off of his own NAG record which he set last November at the Richmond site of the U.S. Open.

U.S. Men’s All-Time Long Course 13-14 100 Fly Rankings

  1. Thomas Heilman – 54.43
  2. Michael Andrew – 54.59
  3. Justin Lynch – 55.68
  4. Dare Rose – 55.68
  5. Michael Phelps – 55.78

Among the top U.S 13-14 year-olds, both Michael Andrew and Michael Phelps are Olympians, with Phelps of course winning this event at three-straight Olympics before his memorable three-way tie for silver in 2016. Andrew is representing the U.S. in Tokyo currently, although he chose not swim this event at Trials. Lynch had a successful career at Cal, while Rose just wrapped up his freshman season at Cal.

Heilman has had a strong showing this week in Cary, registering the following times and place:

  • 50 free – 23.42 (1st)
  • 200 Medley Relay – no split recorded (4th)
  • 200 free – 1:53.54 (1st)
  • 200 Free Relay – (23.26 leadoff) – 1st

That 23.26 leadoff time in the 200 free relay was just 0.03s off of his lifetime best of 23.23 from May, and he sits just behind Michael Andrew’s 23.19 in the all-time age group rankings. Heilman also owns the NAG record for the long course 100 free in this age group, with a 51.20 from last year.

Heilman is also slated to swim the 200 fly later in the meet. His lifetime best of 2:09.50 puts him just outside the top 100 all-time in the age group.
