MARK GANGLOFF, HEAD COACH
Mark Gangloff, an Olympic gold medalist, former captain of the US National team, and respected leader in collegiate swimming, was appointed head coach for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs at the University of North Carolina in 2019. Prior to this position, Gangloff spent seven years as associate head coach at the University of Missouri.
Under the leadership of head coach Mark Gangloff, University of North Carolina’s swimming and diving teams have been making waves on the national stage in recent years. In the 2022 season, the women’s team placed 14th at the NCAA Championship, their second consecutive year in the top 15. The men’s team finished 27th, just outside their 24th place finish in the previous season.
The Tar Heels had a breakout season in 2021, with the women’s team placing 12th at the NCAA Championship with seven first team and five honorable mention All-America individual performances. Two relay teams also earned first team honors and two others received honorable mention. The Tar Heel men also had its best performance in recent years placing in 24th place.
At the 2021 ACC Championships, diving standouts Anton Down-Jenkins and Aranza Vazquez were recognized as Most Valuable Divers at the ACC Championships, with Down-Jenkins winning gold medals in the 1-meter and 3-meter events and Vazquez taking first place in the 3-meter and platform events, as well as a silver medal in the 1-meter. Later in 2021, both Down-Jenkins and Vazquez went on to represent their countries (New Zealand and Mexico, respectively) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In Mark Gangloff’s first season in 2019-20, the Tar Heel’s women’s and men’s programs rose three spots at the ACC Championship meets, finishing in 4th and 7th place respectively, and a total of 13 individuals qualified for the NCAA Championship meet. Unfortunately, the Tar Heel were unable to showcase their talents at the 2020 NCAA Championships because of the Covid pandemic.
Prior to his appointment at UNC, Gangloff spent seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Missouri, where he led the Tigers to five top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships. The Tiger men’s team also achieved back-to-back top-10 finishes in 2016 and 2017, with the 2016 team finishing a program-best 8th nationally and Fabian Schwingenschlogl winning the school’s first NCAA title in the 100 breaststroke. The Tiger women’s team also had an all-time best finish in 2016, placing 11th overall.
Gangloff began his coaching career at Auburn, his alma mater, as a volunteer assistant coach before moving on to Swim MAC Carolina in Charlotte, NC. As a collegiate swimmer at Auburn, Gangloff was a member of the NCAA championship teams in 2003 and 2004 and four consecutive SEC championship teams. He also earned 12 All-America honors and won SEC titles in the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 and 400 medley relays.
Gangloff and his wife Ashley, a former national champion diver, have three daughters, Annabelle (13), Hattie Rose (10), and Kit (7).
