Day 2 Prelims Storylines to Watch:
- World Junior Champs team member Lillie Nordmann is set to swim the women’s 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle this morning, according to the heat sheets. Nordmann was on the heat sheets yesterday as well for the 200 butterfly but chose not to swim, perhaps deciding to focus solely on Budapest in the upcoming weeks. Nordmann is only the 38th seed in the 200 backstroke but the 11th seed in the 100 freestyle. At Senior Nationals last week, the 100 freestyle and the 200 butterfly fell on the same day, and Nordmann focused on the butterfly, placing 2nd. If she swims either race today it will most likely be the 100 freestyle where she could be due for a major time drop, especially after going 57.96 in the 100 fly last week.
- Garrett Boone of the Aquatic Team of Mecklenburg (ATOM) swam very well at the 2019 Charlotte Ultra in June, where he improved his time in the 100 freestyle by over two seconds, and his time in the 50 free by .76. Boone is the 15th seed in the 100, but if he can manage to drop another half-second and break 51 seconds, he could be a lock for the ‘A’ final.
- 13-year-old Leah Hayes is the 10th seed in the 400 IM, though moves up to 6th following scratches from Claire Tuggle, Isabel Gormley, and Emma Muzzy. Hayes just missed out on getting a second swim in the 100 breaststroke Tuesday, finishing 27th in the prelims in 1:12.22, a lifetime best by over two seconds. As a breaststroke specialist, Hayes will have a strong 3rd 100 of the IM, and is also a great freestyler, so expect her to come back strong on the field.
- National Age Group (NAG) Record holder in the 11-12 age group Ronald Dalmacio will race the 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle today. Dalmacio is arguably the best backstroker in 11-12 history, but recently aged up into the 15-16 age group. Dalmacio doesn’t need to break another NAG Record to prove his abilities, but he was relatively quiet in the 13-14 age group. Dalmacio likely hasn’t stopped improving and could be due some noteworthy time drops this week.
Hayes is in fact the 6 seed, due to 4 scratches ahead of her.
