2017 BRITISH SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Reigning 200m freestyle world champion James Guy took the men’s 400m freestyle victory in Sheffield tonight, clocking a super solid time of 3:44.74 to come within .08 of a second of what he notched for 6th place in the Rio Olympics final. Of his performance tonight, Guy says that he is stoked to have gone that fast this early in the season and it’s a good sign of where he’s at physically.

Guy said that, despite a loaded field, he stuck to his own racing tactics against his competitors, ultimately pushing himself to the 5th fastest time in the world this season. He states in his interview that he’s targeting a 3:42 or 3:41-type of time and, based on what he registers in practice, Guy says he knows he has ‘so much more to give’ and ‘has a big swim in him.’

The 21-year-old is hoping his 400m victory on night 1 kickstarts the momentum to carry him through a grueling week of racing, which continues tomorrow with his 200m butterfly.

James Guy, the reigning world champion, is targeting the sorts of time a certain 16 yo kid swam in speedo briefs almost 20 years ago.
Is this happening in any other event?

Referring to Ian Thorpe as a “certain 16 yo kid in speedo briefs” seems pretty disingenuous.

Ian Thorpe was definitely not a kid at 16

Not necessarily. Horton has managed a 3.41 and whilst I’m no Horton fan; there currently is no hard evidence to hand of his doping. Guy has greater front end speed than Horton; the only issue that may mitigate against Guy matching such a time is whether 400 may be a bit beyond his optimal distance
