Women’s 200 Meter Backstroke – Prelims

Top-seeded Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia Aquatic Club posted the morning’s top time (2:11.64), but Riptide’s Regan Smith, who has been on a tear over the last two weeks, dropped 7/10 to move into the second position with 2:11.89 heading into tonight’s final. Smith pops up two spots on the all-time list for 13-14 girls with that swim, moving past Nordmann to #10. Tide Swimming’s Callie Dickinson qualified third with 2:12.69. Audrey Reimer of Fort Collins Area Swim Team dropped 1.6 seconds to squeeze into the championship final, having been seeded 27th on the psych sheet.

The Beach twins of Quest Swimming stole the show in the men’s 200 back prelims; Clark Beach dropped 2 seconds and Ethan Beach took 9/10 off his seed time to qualify first and fourth, respectively. The top two seeds coming into the meet, Josh Artman of Austin Swim Club and Alessandro Boratto of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club qualified second and third, respectively, with 2:00.93 and 2:02.03.

There were quite a few big drops in the 200 back. Ethan Harder of Billings Aquatic Club improved by more than 2.1 seconds and moved from 30th on the psych sheet to 7th out of heats. Sam Iida of Glenview Titan Aquatic Club was 1.5 seconds faster. Making the B final with big drops were Thomas Anderson of King Aquatic Club (-4.8), Charlie Ryan of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club (-2.3), John Whiteside of Westport/Weston Family Y Swim Team (-1.5), and Connor Doyle of Eastern Express (-1.2).

The top three qualifiers in the women’s 100 free all had nice time drops in prelims to land them the middle lanes for tonight’s final. Morgan Scott of Central Bucks Swim Team took nearly 4/10 off her previous best to qualify first for finals; she is now #46 on the all-time list for 15-16 girls. North Bay Aquatics’ Miki Dahlke improved by exactly 1/10 for the second spot, while Greater Tampa Swimming Association’s Morgan Tankersley dropped .35 for the third position.

Top-seeded Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club was right on his time with a strong 50.47 swim in prelims to qualify first for tonight’s final. David Madej of SwimStrongsville lopped nearly a half-second off his seed time to dip under 51 seconds for the first time. The swim earned him the right to lane 5 in finals and moved him up to #21 on the all-time list for 15-16 boys. Cody Bybee of Dayton Riders dropped 4/10 to qualify third for finals with 51.14.

Several other big drops landed their swimmers in the A final: Sam Schilling of Aquajets (-.80), Levente Bathory of Enfinity Aquatic Club (-.61), Jake Sannem of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club (-.54), and Matthew Willenbring of Austin Swim Club (-.52).

Top-seeded Lauren Edelman of Fishers Area Swim Team cruised to a 4:49.59 in prelims to lead the field into finals tonight. Carmel Swim Club’s Sammie Burchill (4:51.92) and Sandpipers of Nevada’s Hailey Houck (4:52.07) were close to their seed times as well, and came out of heats second and third, respectively. Dannie Dilsaver of Greater Nebraska moved from 9th on the psych sheet to the 4th qualifying position, dropping 2/10 for 4:53.19. Maggie Jahns of Fishers Area Swim Team jumped 15 spots with her 1.1-second drop, moving to seventh with 4:56.01.

A half-second drop by Ridgefield Aquatic Club’s Kieran Smith landed him the top qualifying spot in the men’s 400 IM; he clocked a 4:25.52 in prelims to jump 2 spots to #25 all-time for 15-16 boys. Jake Foster of Mason Manta Rays, who qualified fifth in 4:27.80, also moved up on the 15-16 top 100; he is now #66 all-time. His younger brother Carson Foster qualified fourth in 4:27.77, just behind Sam Iida (4:27.13) and Team Greenville’s Tal Davis (4:27.223).
