2015 Canadian Trials: Day Two Finals Preview – Kierra Smith Eyeing Breaststroke Redemption

The Canadian Trials are taking place in Toronto this week and will stand as the selection meet for the World Championships, Pan Am Games, and World University Games.

Heading into day two finals there are some very exciting races set up along with plenty of potential roster spots on the line.

In the women’s 100m freestyle, both Michelle Williams and Chantal Van Landeghem met the FINA ‘A’ standard for the World Championships, however are just short of the Swimming Canada ‘Top 16’ standard they need to meet if they want to qualify for the team. A 54.58 will guarantee both swimmers a position on the roster as long as they come either first or second.

In the 100m freestyle Yuri Kisil is a favourite to make the team. He was the top seed this morning after dropping a 49.23. He’s one of the four swimmers who dipped under the FINA ‘A’ cut and could possibly meet the top 16 standard. Santo Codorelli will be on his tail, a USC swimmer who comes holds dual citizenship between the States and Canada. He was a 49.62 this morning but has undeniable speed.

Kierra Smith will have a chance at redemption in the 100m breaststroke after her disqualification in the 200 last night despite touching the wall first. She was a 1:09.02 in prelims behind only Breeja Larson. Larson is an American and therefore cannot compete in the championship final. If Smith wants to make the team, she’ll need to go a 1:07.97 tonight.

On the men’s side Michigan swimmer Richard Funk is the top seed with a 1:00.76. His time is very close to that ‘Top 16’ time so the potential for him to go to the World Championships is truly on the line tonight.

The 400 IMs have Sydney Pickrem and 200 free winner emily Overholt battling it out. The men’s race will be between Luke Reilly, Tristan Cote, and Alec Page. There’s no absolute favourite in either race, bringing the potential for a very close finish at the wall.
