The prelims session on day three did not have many surprises, but two swimmers put up times that have them sitting atop the world rankings.
The first came in the women’s 100 IM where Emily Seebohm posted a time of 58.22 that is over half a second faster than the previous world’s best of 58.77, which was recorded by both Hungarian Katinka Hosszu and Louise Hansson of Sweden. Seebohm’s time is only three one-hundredths of a second off her lifetime best and 23 one-hundredths of a second faster than her winning time from last year.
She will have to contend with Commonwealth record holder Alicia Coutts who qualified second in a time of 59.03.
Seebohm was also the top qualifier in the women’s 100 backstroke hitting the wall in a time of 56.49. Tonight she will be aiming at both her own Australian record of 55.31, which she put up earlier this year and Hosszu’s world record of 55.03.
Cameron McEvoy, who won the 100 freestyle on Friday evening, was the top qualifier in the men’s 200 freestyle recording a time of 1:42.24. McEvoy took over the top spot in the world rankings from Russian Alexander Krasnyikh who posted a 1:42.30 at the Russian Short Course Championships.
Kenneth To was the top qualifier in both the men’s 50 butterfly and 200 IM (1:56.73). To’s time of 22.87 in the 50 butterfly places him second in the world rankings.
Mitch Larkin dominated the men’s 200 backstroke qualifying in a time of 1:48.78 nearly seven seconds ahead of the field.
Georgia Bohl will look to win her second breaststroke event of the competition, but will have to get past Taylor McKeown and last year’s champion Sally Hunter to do so. Mckeown was the top qualifier in a time of 2:22.69 followed by Bohl (2:22.83) and Hunter (2:24.02).
Jessica Ashwood will be going for her third gold of the competition in the women’s 400 freestyle. Ashwood was the top qualifier posting a 4:03.20. She was followed by Bronte Barratt (4:06.03) and Emma McKeon (4:06.46). Mckeon won the event in 2014 in a time of 4:00.63.
The Campbell sisters were the top two qualifiers in the women’s 50 freestyle. Cate posted the fastest time of 24.02 followed by Bronte who hit the wall in a time of 24.23.
