Jersey Wahoos 17-year-old Maddie Waggoner has given her verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin for the fall of 2023. Waggoner is a stellar distance freestyler, with a fair bit of versatility to boot. Most recently, Waggoner took 2nd in the 1650 free at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East meet in Greensboro. She also qualified for the A final of the 500 free at that meet.

Waggoner is rapidly improving in the mile, which is her best event. She started 2021 with a personal best of 17:22.44 in the 1650, which she swam in 2019, when she was 15. In early March of 2021, she lowered her time down to 16:39.03, before swimming a 16:19.57 in late March. She then took that time down to her 16:08.75. In the LCM 1500, she got down to 16:35.20, which ranks her as the #51 performer all-time among 15-16 girls.
Her personal best in the 1650 would have earned Waggoner a 5th-place finish at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. She also would have earned an invite to NCAAs, where she would have finished 11th last year. She’ll add great depth to a distance group in Wisconsin that already features sub-16:00 miler Paige McKenna.
