The Nebraska Cornhuskers hosted the Fighting Illini today in a Big Ten matchup, as the Huskers took the victory with a final score of 162-138.
Illinois was out to the stronger start, with Gabbie Stecker winning the 1000 (10:17.90) and Amelia Schilling (1:53.49) and Megan Vuong (1:53.77) topping the field in the 200 free. These two wins came after Nebraska took the 200 medley relay, helped out by a solid 23.07 anchor leg from sprinter Taryn Collura.
Collura was essential to the Huskers’ success today, as she led a 1-2 finish in the 50 free and took the 100 free by a margin of 1.32 seconds. Additionally, the Huskers got great swims from their top backstroker Erin Oeltjen and best breaststroker Jordan Ehly in both the 100 and 200 versions of each stroke. Oeltjen was 57.53 in the 100 and 2:00.91 in the 200, while Ehly also recorded double wins in the 100 (1:04.85) and the 200 (2:17.26).
Illinois’ strongest performer was Sam Stratford— she led the field in the 200 fly (2:03.95) and paced the 200 IM (2:05.29). Joining her as a double winner was Schilling, who came back after her 200 free victory to take the 500 free (5:02.91).
The Huskers sprinted to the win in the closing 200 free relay, once again anchored by an impressive 22.86 split from Collura.
Both teams will be on the road for their last duals of the season next weekend; Nebraska heads to Washington State, and Illinois will face Arkansas.
