13 year old Claire Tuggle, who swims for Clovis Swim Club, went a jaw-dropping 4:41.36 to win the 500 free at the 2018 NCSA Spring Junior National Meet. That was Tuggle’s 2nd event win of the meet, after winning the 200 free in a 1:44.96 last night. Tuggle dropped a whopping 5 seconds from her previous best time of 4:46.43. Her time comes in 5th in the USA Swimming all-time rankings for 13-14 girls. Even more impressive, she is now the fastest 13 year old 500 freestyler by over 3 and a half seconds. The previous fastest 13 year old was Madison Homovich, who went 4:44.99 as a 13 year old. Katie Ledecky, who holds the 13-14 NAG at 4:35.14, was 4:45.63 as a 13 year old.
Tuggle negative split the race, which is almost unbelievable. She was 2:21.22 on the first 250, and brought the 2nd 250 back in 2:20.14. Here are her splits:
26.00 | |
28.45 | 54.45 |
29.17 | |
28.76 | 57.93 |
28.84 | |
28.47 | 57.31 |
28.57 | |
28.43 | 57.00 |
28.32 | |
26.35 | 54.67 |
4:41.36 |
Some interesting things to note about her splits are that she only had 1 29-point split, which came on her 3rd 50. Also, her 2nd 100 was her slowest split, which is pretty unusual.
Her stroke reminds me of Van Almsick

Congrats on another big swim and another big time drop. I like how she builds her races. Next season she breaks Missy’s 200 free and Katie’s 500 free 13/14 NAG records.
13 year old kid would have finished 29th I. The 500 and 20th in the 200 at NCAA’s this week.
Crazy
Descended her last 4 x100s, pretty solid.. something you’d expect from a really experienced distance swimmer.. guess we shouldn’t put it past her.
Clovis is only 170 miles from Stanford U. IT might be fun to have Katie and the Stanford team adopt and train with her. Katie was also 15 yo at her first Olympics. Think about the possibilities…
She’s going to Fresno State!
Ew
Unreal. It will be interesting to see what trajectory her times are on. If she makes only marginal improvements each year, she’ll still put up some amazing swims by the time she’s a freshman in college.
I wonder if she’ll see this comment

Maybe she has better things to do than reading your comments?
