YMCA of Marquette County Killer Whales logoThe YMCA of Marquette County Killer Whales swim team is a year-round competitive swim program that is affiliated with the YMCAs of Wisconsin and Michigan’s UP for competition. The team has over 100 athletes in the Marquette area and another 35 at a satellite site on Houghton, MI. The program includes a developmental group for ages 9 & under beginners called Future Stars as well as Bronze, Silver, Gold and National training groups. Practices are held at the YMCA, local high school and University pools and the Houghton High School pool.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Head Swim Coach is responsible for oversight and day-to-day operations of the competitive youth swim team operating in Marquette & Houghton, Michigan with headquarters in Marquette.

QUALIFICATIONS

The YMCA Killer Whales Head Coach will be an energetic, enthusiastic and organized individual who has the following qualifications: college degree preferred; current certifications in CPR, First Aid, Lifeguarding and Safety Training for Swim Coaches. Also, the successful candidate must have either Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving or USA Swimming Coach credentials or the ability to obtain within 1 month of hire. Successful applicants should have a minimum of four years of coaching experience; applicants with previous head coaching experience are preferred. Previous experience with a nonprofit organization and YMCA is preferred.

JOB DIMENSIONS

• Work with the Publicity and Program Planning Committee to recruit swimmers for the team.
• Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions both in the water and additional dryland strength practices with an eye toward helping athletes reach both short and long term goals.
• Provide training direction, encouragement, and motivation in order to prepare swimmers for competitive events at all levels.
• Promote an atmosphere of team cohesiveness by working closely with social committee.
• Recruit, interview, hire, schedule, train and supervise assistant coaches and volunteers.
• Assist with the development and management of annual budget for the swim program and monthly budget monitoring.
• Set up, post and run meets using Hy-Tek Meet Manager software.
• Knowledge of IST or similar electronic timing system operations, including troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of electronic components.
• Use TeamUnify software to manage athlete data, meet registration, team entries, team communication and to organize volunteers for home swim meets, fund raising efforts, concessions operations and other team functions.
• Organize volunteers and event workers for at least two large swim invitational’s per year.
• Oversee and effectively manage assistant coaches who work at multiple pool sites with different age athletes and training groups, including an offsite staff located in Houghton.
• Fundraise
• Negotiate pool rental contracts with the local high schools and University
• Work with Swim Team Parent Group to set up and manage all home meets.
• Handle all team swim meet entries and swim meet accounting duties with help from the YMCA Finance Leader
• All other duties assigned by supervisor.

Marquette, MI is a progressive, community-minded city with a population of about 20,000 situated in the southern shore of Lake Superior.
