TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Zoe Smith and Marni Gray set new Indiana State school records as the Sycamores took on the University of Indianapolis in a time trial meet on Saturday afternoon at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
Smith set a new ISU mark in the 1M diving event as the junior topped the field with a score 290.55. Her mark is the second-best in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Gray tied Kaimi Matsumoto’s 50-yard Butterfly mark with a time of 25.16 and is the fastest mark in the MVC to date.
Rose Parsons and Trista Bullock also added personal-best swims on the afternoon, while Raine Boles added two wins on the afternoon to lead the Sycamores in the event.
“I’m really pleased with how today went,” head coach Josh Christensen said. “We had a lot of fun racing, but also accomplished some important things. This team is so much fun to coach and I’m excited to see us keep growing through the second half of the season.”
Indiana State opened up the time trial meet against the Greyhounds with the 50-yard backstroke with the Sycamores putting three in the top-four in the field led by Carmen Alard Vegas’ 26.33 to pace the event. Olivia DiRuzza finished third overall in 27.41, while Kaimi Matsumoto was just behind her teammate in 27.50. Elle Gilkerson (27.90, 6th), Marissa Kozel (28.32, 7th), Tori Johns (28.75, 9th), and Jordan Gruce (29.09, 10th) also posted top-10 finishes for the Sycamores in the event.
Alexa Szadorski was first to the wall in the 50-yard breaststroke as the sophomore paced the field in 30.03 to win the event. Peyton Heagy finished second overall in 30.32, while Kamila Nowak added a top-five result in 31.34. Makayla Sura closed out the Sycamores finishing eighth overall in 32.10.
Marni Gray tied the Indiana State school record in the 50-yard butterfly as the senior equaled the previous best set by Kaimi Matsumoto at the 2022 CSCAA National Invitational Championships. Gray’s time of 25.16 led the field, while Raine Boles (25.45, 2nd) and Rebecca Shaffer (26.22, 3rd) posted a top-three sweep for the Sycamores. Colleen O’Connor (26.45, 5th), Carmina Armstrong (26.58, 6th), and Haley Halsall (27.27, 9th) added top-10 finishes in the event. Kalli Agapios (27.69, 11th) rounded out the Sycamores in the field.
Rose Parsons put on a career-best finish in the 1000-yard freestyle as the sophomore shaved 20.32 seconds off her previous mark to finish in 10:19.77. Parsons’ finish put her fifth all-time in the Indiana State performance list and seventh all-time in the top-20 list.
Trista Bullock led the field in the 200-yard freestyle as the sophomore joined the ISU performance list on her way to touching the wall in 1:51.84. She paced the field finishing ahead of Marni Gray (1:52.73, 2nd), Katie Dougherty (1:53.17, 3rd), Dorotea Bukvic (1:53.17, 3rd), Kamila Nowak (1:54.70, 5th), and Carmina Armstrong (1:56.04, 6th) as the Sycamores posted the top-six times in the field.
Alexandria Cotter was tops among the Sycamores in the 100-yard backstroke as the sophomore touched the wall second in 58.00. Kalli Agapios (58.19, 3rd), Esther Rydbeck Nordan (59.77, 4th), Rhiannon Wozny (1:00.17, 5th), and Rebecca Shaffer (1:03.56, 6th) also finished among the leaders in the event.
Molly Fogarty posted her first win of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke as the senior touched the wall in 1:10.22 to lead the way. Sarah Moreau (1:10.88, 2nd) and Haley Halsall (1:13.22, 4th) also posted top finishes in the event.
Raine Boles entered ISU’s all-time performance list in the 200-yard butterfly as the freshman touched the wall in 2:05.83 to lead the event. Her time put her ninth on the list with a personal mark in the event.
Alexa Szadorski picked up her second win of the day in the 50-yard freestyle as Indiana State swept the top-10 overall in the field. Szadorski’s mark of 23.95 led the way while Cotter (24.65, 2nd), Colleen O’Connor (24.75, 3rd) and Jordan Gruce (24.75, 3rd) were also in the top-three in the event. Trista Bullock (24.80), Katie Dougherty (24.85), Marissa Kozel (24.98), Elle Gilkerson (25.16), Molly Fogarty (25.30), and Olivia DiRuzza (25.32) all highlighted the Sycamores in the event.
Kaimi Matsumoto led the Sycamores in the 100-yard individual medley as the senior finished second in the field in 58.80. Carmen Alard Vegas (59.04, 3rd) and Peyton Heagy (1:00.39, 5th) both added top-five finishes, while Rhiannon Wozny (1:00.60, 6th), Elle Gilkerson (1:01.33, 7th), Olivia DiRuzza (1:01.95, 8th), Sarah Moreau (1:02.35, 9th), and Makayla Sura (1:02.56, 10th) all finished in the top 10 overall.

Katie Dougherty (2:23.39, 1st) and Alexa Szadorski (2:23.70, 2nd) went 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke event to lead the Sycamores in the field.
Marni Gray (54.64) topped four Sycamores in the field in the 100-yard butterfly to take her second event win. Molly Fogarty (58.64), Carmina Armstrong (59.64), and Sarah Morean (1:00.34) rounded out the Indiana State competitors in the event.
Trista Bullock turned in another strong performance in the 500-yard Freestyle event as the sophomore led five Sycamores in the field in 5:03.22. Dorotea Bukvic (5:04.23, 2nd), Colleen O’Connor (5:13.18, 3rd), Kalli Agapios (5:19.44, 4th), and Peyton Heagy (5:19.98, 5th) completed the top-five in the event.
Kaimi Matsumoto topped the field in the 200-yard individual medley as the senior touched the wall in 2:05.80 to lead the way. Esther Rydbeck Norden (2:10.81, 2nd) and Haley Halsall (2:10.90, 3rd) rounded out the Sycamores in the field.
Raine Boles closed out the swimming competition on her way to topping the field in the 100-yard freestyle event. The freshman touched the wall in 51.95 as the Sycamores had the top 10 finishers in the field. Carmen Alard Vegas (53.56), Kamila Nowak (53.56), Rhiannon Wozny (53.68), Marissa Kozel (53.79), Dorotea Bukvic (53.95), Rebecca Shaffer (55.07), Tori Johns (55.60), Rose Parsons (56.29), and Makayla Sura (57.22) all finished among the Sycamore leaders in the event.
Zoe Smith swept both diving competitions as the junior turned in a historic performance on Saturday afternoon. Smith set a new school-record mark in the 1M diving event with a 290.55 to surpass the previous best set by Bailey Betzer (278.93) last season against Butler in 2021. Smith followed up with a 282.68 for the second-best performance all-time by an ISU diver in the 3M dive.
Betzer finished second in the 1M dive with a season-best 260.02, while Daniela Orta Castaneda posted a P.R. with a 211.05. Sierra Bowman rounded out the group in 193.28 in the event.
Betzer added a personal-best in the 3M dive with her 279.22 the fourth-best mark in school history in finishing behind Smith in the event. Orta Castaneda also set a P.R. in the event with her 248.48 the sixth-best score on the ISU performance list. Sierra Bowman also set a new mark with her score of 216.00 surpassing her previous best set against Butler in 2021.

Indiana State swimming and diving hits the road one final time in the 2022 calendar year as the Sycamores travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on North Florida Ospreys on Saturday, December 17. Competition is set to start at 11 a.m. at the UNF Competition Pool Complex.

Meanwhile on Saturday, the women’s time trial was highlighted by graduate student Kaitlyn McCoy finishing first in the 100 backstroke and 100 IM. In the backstroke, McCoy finished with a 55.79 which is 1.27 seconds off of her best time but was still a b-cut time. She also finished with a 58.38 in the 100 IM.
The Hounds will now take a short break before opening the New Year with the final home dual of the season when they host the visiting Big Red of Denison on January 7.
