Yakov Toumarkin Re-Breaks His Israeli Record in 200 IM in ISL Semifinal #2

2020 INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING LEAGUE – SEMIFINAL #2

Iron swimmer Yakov Toumarkin has broken the Israeli National Record in the 200 IM in semifinal #2 of the International Swimming League.

Toumarkin swam a 1:53.17 to place 3rd in the event, about a second behind the winner Leonardo Santos, his ISL teammate. The swim broke his own National Record of 1:53.57 set at the 2019 European Short Course Swimming Championships.

New Israel Record
Old Israel Record
Fly 24.67 24.79
Back 28.52 28.69
Breast 32.56 32.47
Free 27.42 27.62
Total Time 1:53.17 1:53.57

Toumarkin holds a total of 7 Israel National Records, including the 200 back, 200 breast, 100 IM, and 200 IM in short course meters.

For ISL purposes, the expanded abilities in the 200 IM for the 28-year old Toumarkin makes him a more valuable swimmer in the context of the league, though his primary race, the 200 backstroke, has been lagging. For example, in his first race of the session, in what has historically been his best event the 200 back, Toumarkin was 5th in 1:52.01 – about 2 seconds slower than his National Record in that race. Half-an-hour later, he swam a best time in the 200 IM.

In long course, he hasn’t been closer to 2 seconds from his National Record in the 200 back since 2017. That fits him into the category of swimmers who are likely done with any major chase for podiums in international meets, but who can still be valuable contributors in the ISL format.

Toumarkin, who was born in Russia, has represented Israel internationally dating back to 2010, where he won silver in both the 100 and 200 meter backstrokers at the Youth Olympic Games, and was the European Junior Champion in the 100 back.

He won a pair of bronze medals at the 2012 European Championships in long course, a pair of silvers in short course at the 2015 Europeans, and the 2016 silver medal in the 200 back at the long course European Championships.
